Trigger Pull Adjustment!
« on: June 18, 2004, 06:59:17 AM »
I had my Handi-Rifle trigger adjusted to 3.5 lb. pull and it spoiled me! If you haven't had it done yet you should, you will be "very happy". I have .270, 30-06 and 30-30 barrels and the new trigger is fantastic with improving my accuracy. It spoiled me so bad that I'm having my gunsmith put a new trigger assbly. on my Ruger M77 to get it down to 3.5 lb. pull. (I still hunt my Handi almost exclusively).

How's the recoil on the '06 barrel compared to the 30-30?

I actually had two "06" barrels. Got the nicest buck of my life (scored a 109, thats big for me) with the ventelated muzzle break but thought I would never hear again. I then got a standard barrel, it would loosen my teeth when I shot it so I sold it. Now if I'm shooting the muzzle break barrel I use "Sonic Ear" plugs. I'm kind of recoil sensitive so the 30-06 standard barrel was really more than I could handle.

I think I'd be more comfortable letting a gunsmith work on a trigger, for safety reasons. How complicated is the job- and what is a reasonable price you'd expect to pay?

I did a trigger job on mine a couple of nights ago after finding the "how to" on this forum.   It was relatively simple, well, everything was simple except getting the pins out to begin with.   Those things are a booger to remove.

Raterbefishin, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, H&R will do it for you.  You can send it in just for a trigger job, or have an additional barrel installed at the same time.

When I had mine done, it didn't cost anything.  I don't know if it is still free or not.  you can call them at (978) 630-8220 and ask them about it.

It's still free unless you specifically ask for less than 3lb pull weight, then they charge $10, sent mine in about a month ago or so, sure seems like a lot longer, though....

one little problem-I live in Canada, so that means we can't ship the action across the border-and that also means we can't avail ourselves of the extra barrel program.I had wondered if we could order the barrels anyway and just go to our own gunsmith to set it up-which probaby invalidates the warrenty.
Its funny , you know we have all these restrictions on legitimate firearms[ like who is goingto make a single shot rifle or shotgun the weapon of choice for terrorist activeties?So- all these restrictions do is curtail the legitimate firearms owner- the illicit cross border gun trade of smuggled weapons continues unabated

Ratherbefishin, I feel for you.  I guess I'm spoiled living down here in the lower fifty.

I had debated sending mine to the factory to have the trigger worked since someone told me that if I did the trigger job myself it would void the warranty on the rifle.
After thinking about that, a thought popped into my lil mind.   "Warranty" on a Handi-Rifle.  Let's see what the Handi-Rifle has.   A barrel, a receiver, ejector and some wood etc etc.   Thats about the same as a warranty on an anvil, as long as the rifle is in good working order before you do the trigger job.  Just how are you gonna tear it up????
Soooooo, I then came to the conclusion I would do the trigger myself with the aid of the tutorial listed on this site, and wouldn't have to wait a month or more to get my rifle back.
After getting the pins out of the receiver the trigger job was a piece of cake, just make sure to read and adhere to everything in the tutorial.

Not trying to persuade anyone to do it themselves, just stating how it worked for me.

I wasn't that brave. I'm lucky enough to have access to a "retired" gunsmith that is a H&R enthusiast. He owned a gun shop for 30 something years and just works on select guns. In fact I get mine done through a friend that knows him. Cost me $35.00, he said it is a very stable trigger. I had to order an after market trigger assby for my Ruger, he said those triggers aren't that easy to adjust, he's more comfortable with the after market. The Ruger job is going to cost about $100.
