500MAG Reloading - Die problem??
« on: June 18, 2004, 03:43:28 PM »
I have been reloading the 500MAG sense it came out. I have a set of CH4 dies and a set of RCBS dies. I reloaded for both the S&W500 and my BFR500MAG and in both cases, I found the case hard to run through the sizing process. I have tried several different case lubes and the result is the same. I am currently using imperial sizing wax and it is the same. I am only having this problem with my 500MAG brass. I have to use a lot of leverage to cycle the press. It feels as if the case wants to stick in the sizing die. I had one stick in and I pushed the press handle up so hard it ripped the rim of the case. I only had that happen once. I was able to use a drift to remove the cartridge from the die. Is anyone else having this problem? It is with both sets of dies and out of 2 different guns. I have cleaned the dies out real good but that did not help either. Any suggestions???

My guess is you are not using enough lube. Also after you clean a die you need to lube the inside of the die before proceeding or you can get a stuck case like that. I use Hornady one shot and as long as I apply it heavy enough I never have those problems. But if I skimp a little the cases tend to stick. KN

I have tried Dillon Spray, RCBS roll on Lube and the imperial sizing wax and a couple others. I use a lot of lube. I will try even more. I did lube the dies prior to reloading. I only have problems with the 500MAG. I reload for over 15 different cartridges and the 500MAG is my redhead step child. :) If all else fails I will get as set of Lee carbide dies or RCBS carbide dies.

Thanks
for the feedback.

RCBS Will Make It Right

What brand brass are you using.  I'm using Starline brass (500 S&W) and standard RCBS dies with the RCBS case lube in the bottle.  I have not had any problems like you're describing.

My suggestion is to send the RCBS dies back to RCBS, along with about 5 cases.  They'll make it right, and make it right very quickly.

I have been loading the Jamison Int. brass. Also some cor-bon brass. It is not only my RCBS dies, it is my CH4 dies as well. I have the RCBS lube in the bottle, I will try to use more lube to see if it helps.

I tend to agree with KN.  When I resize my 45-70 cases, I have to use a LOT more case lube than I do with any of my other cases.

Try using more lube and see if it works for you.

I reload for the 444 Marlin, 45-70, 454 Casull, 44 MAG and a lot more and never had to put an extreme amount of lube on my cases. I have never had this problem with any other round. I just find it a little funny, that it is 2 different dies and from 2 different guns.  But thanks for all the input. :)

Well, I cleaned both sets of dies and ran some extra fine steel wood through and lube the die's with RCBS case lube and pulled out the old lube pad, lubed up the cases and they worked good this time. I sizes 100 cases and not one problem.  :-D  I guess I will have to stick to the old lube pad and RCBS case lube for the 500MAG. The Dillon spray case lube and the imperial sizing wax did not work for me with the 500MAG.

Redhawk1,  I use the RCBS case slick with the roll pad.  No problem
after the first couple of cases the resize die gets lubed.
