Maxi-Ball Load for 209*50

Hey,

Picked up a 209*50 barrel right after I got my muzzleloading elk tag in the Colorado drawing this year.  Sabot loads are illegal in Colorado, but I understand that the 209*50 barrel is twisted specifically for sabot loads.

Are there any maxi-ball loads (preferably T/C) that are compatible with the 209*50 twist rate?

The 209 50 barrel has a 1:28 twist.  It should should shoot conicals pretty good.  I used to shoot the 370 gr T/C Maxi balls over 110 gr Goex FFg in a 1:28 T/C barrel (a black diamond), and that load shot great out of my gun.

I also have an elk tag for Colo.  I have taken several elk with a 385 gr Hornady and 90 gr. of Pyrodex in a TC Hawken.  I plan to use my 209 x 50 this year and will probably use the same load.  I shot a couple of the big bullets when I was sighting it in with sabots and they shot as good as the sabots.  I may try a load with triple 7 as it requires less cleaning and I can see which direction the elk runs. (if it don't drop on the spot)

Is a Powerbelt considered to be a saboted bullet, or is it considered to be a bullet/wad combination?

It's not like a traditional sabot, since it's not covered completely by the plastic sabot.  But it's not the same as a plain bullet either.

Advertisements for Powerbelts are careful to call them "bullets."  In fact, they use this quote:

PowerBelt Bullets are the most advanced muzzeleloading projectiles ever developed with all of the benefits of saboted bullets but none of the problems.

So it would seem that the manufacturers do not consider them to be saboted bullets.  So they might be legal in Colorado.  Re-phrasing Bill Clinton;  "It depends on what your definition of sabot is."

I was asking around on the range last weekend about suggested 209 loads, and a couple well thought of fellas suggested the black belt bullets.  I asked if they were considered (illegal) sabots in CO and they told me matter of factly that they were legal.  

And that's what I know about them.
