Vented Muzzle Break 30-06
« on: June 19, 2004, 11:45:58 AM »
I was sighting in my 30-06 at the range and noticed that the guy at the next table would wait until I shot before he took a shot. During the break he asked me "What in the world are you shooting"?
He said the shock from my gun was so heavy people two tables down were complaining. I wear ear protection at the shooting range so I didn't know how loud the gun was until I shot the biggest deer of my life with it later that season (109). Thank goodness I wasn't in a box stand. I was in a tree stand and when I pulled the trigger all I heard was a "Click" and "Silence"!

Wear Ear Protection With Muzzle Break Guns!! Warn The Guys Next To You At The Range! They help reduce recoil a lot though.

I believe those type of complaints are why NEF dropped the Ultra Comp barrel.  IMHO

I personally HATE to shoot anywhere near a comp'ed rifle.  Wait till some clown opens up next to you with a 300 Win Mag that is ported.  Last time I felt concussion like that was a grenade in boot camp, 1972.

That just plain HURTS.

Now you know why none of my rifles are ported, I'd rather handle the recoil than noise.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Hey Guys:

Didn't I read somewhere that the ported handi's muzzel break was threaded on??? If that is the case..it wouldn't take a great deal to have a sleeve threaded for it ...now would it?Just unscrew the break and put on the sleeve in it's place...

Clovis,

I can understand why the guy at the next bench was complaining. However, even ear protection is no guarantee with a muzzle brake, particularly for the next guy over. For the shooter, it is not as bad as the gas is not directed backwards but rather in a circle around the barrel and as the gas is pressurized and hot, the physics of expanding gases ensures that the guy at the next bench will notice it. While there are some differences, porting is pretty much the same.

I lost 25% of the hearing in my left ear and got tinnitus as a bonus when a short barreled gun with a brake was used at the bench next to mine. After only 2 shots, the damage was done not by the noise but by the shock wave of the gas. Had I not been wearing both muffs and plugs with a NRR rating of 29, hmmmmm, it would have been far worse.

A poster here emailed me a pic of a very handy Handi. The barrel was cut off sublegal, and then extended with a very pretty aluminum brake.
Mountainveiw, are you suggesting this gun could damage hearing through muffs, or would it require more powder than a 308 holds to really hurt somebody?

You can take a reasonable approach such as this in England, but will get taxed to heck (and it's banned outright in some states) if you try to be a good neighbor and control your noise output in the USA:

I'm glad to hear that the H&R stopped making the muzzle break guns. I swore off the 30-06 all together, muzzle break or not, recoil is too much for me. I shoot 30-30 and 270 in the handi. I swear I couldn't hear for about 8 hours after that unprotected shot and can't wear sonic ears while hunting.

Clovis,

There's no need in swearing off the .30-06.  Just load it with 21.0 gr of Blue Dot and the bullet of your choice and notice the reduced recoil, muzzle blast and flinch!  The load should result in groups of about 1 to 1 1/2" at `100 yards, as it does in my 2 groove 03-A3 (it still has the steel butt plate).  The 06 can stand about 50% loads of Blue Dot without any pressure signs.

To determine the capacity, fill the case with Blue Dot and weigh that quantity (should be about 53 gr.).  Then multiply that weight by the percentage (stay between 20% and 50% on the 06).  Other cases can stand up to 60%, like those based on the 7 X 57 Mauser.  The .223 does real nice with about 12.0 gr and 55 gr bullets, shoots about like a .22 Hornet.

This whole concept allows one gun to duplicate ballistics for many chamberings that have less case capacity, i.e. a .223 can be made to shoot like a .222, a Hornet, a .22 Mag or a .22 LR and usually with better accuracy than the rimfires will produce.

Don,

This works with bottle necked cases.  I don't know about the .45/70 and the other straight sided cases.

I have loaded 7 mm Mag, .30-06, .25-06, 6 mm Rem  and .223 so far and had good results with all of them.  I found 6.0 gr in the .22 Hornet to be pretty much a max load, but the accuracy wasn't as good as it could be.  I still need to work on .35 Whelen, .243 and .30-30.
