Good paint for a cannon.
« on: June 19, 2004, 02:31:24 PM »
Help....I'm about to put the finishing touch on a BP cannon.  Soon as I get it completed, I'll post some pictures.  In the mean time, I need some help in determining how to paint the tube (about 40-inches) and iron field type carriage with a split trail.  It'll be black but I'm not certain just how to apply the paint without botching it up.  Spray paint would be the easiest but it always runs for me. Or a brush would probably be OK but would certainly show my brush marks.  I've even considered a sponge type brush which usually works out pretty well.  Also, if I use other than spray can paint, what type paint (lead base, lacquer or ??) would be the best to use , keeping in mind, this cannon will NOT be sitting outside in the weather???  I'm anxious to get going on this completion but thought some of you good folks with the experience will help me with some good and worth while suggestions.  NO, I can't affort to have it commercially painted.  Gotta do it myself.  Thanks in advance.  Blaster (Bob in CO)

Make sure you put on a good primer first. Use the spray cans but don't try for full coverage the first pass.  Make one one fairly quick pass on each side. Let it dry then do it agains covering the thin spots.   Don't spray the same spot twice with wet paint and don't stop the can while spraying.

Might take two or three applications

Paint is a persistant issue.

I had my first mortar bright hard-chrome plated - could only have it done on the outside.  The local plating plant did it for $10 back in 1974.

Black chrome (developed by NASA) is a layer of nickle on top of the standard copper wash.  The nickle instead of being polished is oxidized and then chromium plated.  Beautiful, durable, expensive.

My 4.5" (look to left) was Armaloy industrial hard chrome plated inside and out.  It was a first for them and they didn't charge much.  I KNOW I couldn't afford to have it done again though.  Cleans up easily - flush with water, wipe up a bit, flush and dry.

I appreciate the information have received so far and hope to get even more so that I have a lot of options to choose from.  Calamity - hey nice cannon and carriage, you did an outstanding job on them.........but, mine is already made and sorry, but it's only steel so I'll have to bite the bullet and be satisfied with what I have.  Maybe some day I'll be able to afford a nice brass/bronze model too.  I have seen some real nice brass mortars and cannons down at the BIG Tulsa Gun Show and there'll be one coming up in late October.  Maybe I'll sell enough "stuff" to get myself one of those shiney ones too.  Thanks folks!  Blaster (Bob in CO)

Another option.  Uzi's are typically parkarized (phosphoric acid treatment) which leaves a rough dark gray/black color and PAINTED by the Isralies.

The parkerized finish gives a good bonding surface for the paint  - which is somewhat durable and certainly renewable.

There are other baked-on finishes for guns that you might want to consider as well.

Cat Whisperer, yeah, the baked on coating would have been very nice but I'm out here in the "sticks" without access to anything like that.  So,  I went to the local Super Walmart and bought a can of Rust-oleum auto primer (gray) and primed it.  The primer even looked real good and reminded me of the U.S. Naval tubes.  Then, I used Rust-oleum again, matt black and it covered the gray primer very well.  I'm letting it dry for the recommended 24 hours before reassembling the entire gun.  Whoever made this cannon, did a lot of planning and welding.  The trunion caps are such that they have brass inserts that provide a bearing surface for the trunions.  Double D has furnished me with some instructions on posting a picture but for some reason, I couldn't even register with the freebie one, Photobucket.com.  as it wouldn't accept anything I put in as who recommended their service.  Sent them an e-mail almost a week ago but Photobucket customer service has never responded.  Guess I can't really say too much since it is a free service.  Thanks, Blaster (Bob in CO)
