Yard sale find...need help with truck cap
« on: June 20, 2004, 07:52:00 AM »
I managed to get my hands on a Ronson fiberglass truck cap for my Ranger at a yard sale yesterday.  The guy wanted to unload it and I was willing to take it.  Got it for $80 and a song and a dance.  Its a little scratched up, but no big deal, and the color is diferent than my truck, again no big deal.  The only problem is that there is no key to the lock, so I need to replace it.  So my question is, where do I get a new lock for it?  Do I need to replace the whole handle or is the lock itself easily replaceable?  This is important because thats why I bought the cap.  My hunting accessories and tools have greatly outgrown being able to be locked in the cab.  With the cap I now have a means of keeping my possesions secure, at least when I replace the lock  .
So any help will be appreciated.

Brian,

A lot of those T handle locks are pretty generic in their key codes.  If you went to a place that sells caps, they may have a bunch of keys you can try and see if one fits your lock.

Without seeing the lock I can't tell how to take out the cylinder, but if you were to take it to a locksmith they could probably impression cut a key for you or they may find the key number somewhere on the lock.

However a suggestion would be to also install a hasp and padlock in addition to that handle lock, and curtain your windows to keep the visability down.

Most RV, repair places have the innuards for the handle, or can sell you a new "T" handle with the keys. Like thomas said a hasp and curtains help against "Prying" eyes.

If there is a key number on the outside (face) of the lock clyinder, I may have an extra key or two to fit it I could send you.  If it's the common removeable cylinder type, just replacing the lock cylinder is a quick/easy task.

If it has the common 'T' handle type they are identical to those used on garage doors and a replacement can be found at any hardware store.
