24 day turn around!
« on: June 20, 2004, 04:06:26 PM »
I gave my Handi Rifle action to the UPS man on May 25 and sent it in mostly to get a better trigger pull. It came with an 8 lb pull, but as long as I was sending it in I ordered a .45-70 bbl. This Friday (Jun 18) evening the UPS man shows up at my door with the "new" Handi rifle. The trigger is great, about 3 lbs. The down side is my rifle was/is a .30/06 and has a Monte Carlo stock so I look right over the rear iron sight on the .45/70 bbl. I'm new here and have just mostly lurked and enjoyed everything I've learned but thought some of you might be interested to know that now seems to be a good time to send stuff in for new bbl's or trigger work. Another item or two of interest would be the conversation with the gentelman who handled my phone call to set up sending my rifle to HR. He told me they no longer had any .357 bbl's and had ceased production. I asked  him about how to cure the tendancy of my '06 to string it's groups. I'd tried the shim under the forearm but it didn't seem to matter. He told me if my stock was wood, not to bother with the shim, but to free float the fore arm from the attachment lug forward. I've floated the forearm but as yet haven't gotten to the range to see how the new trigger and the floated fore arm will work. The 06 will clover leaf two rounds and then throw the third 1 1/2 inches from the other two.

I am looking for some advise on a couple of things. I like the way the monte carlo fits me with the 06 bbl and don't really want to change the stocks, so that will force me to mount a scope on the .45/70. But not having tried the "standard" stock it might not be that big a deal to use both bbls with it. I'd like to hear what some of you may have to offer. Especially since I'd rather use the iron sights on the 45/70. But I may have to just use a scope on both. I have a couple of old 4X scopes that would work and I'd just have to get the mount. That is probably the cheapest/easiest route to easily using both barrels with a minimum of fuss converting from one to another. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I'll check back after my next range session, but next week is fishing so it'll be a couple of weeks before I can get to it. CH

You might try the standard or shotgun style stock for the 45-70 and add a lace on cheek piece for the '06 barrel.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I did the same thing, added a 45-70 barrel to an Ultra.  I asked for a scope rail instead of open sights though.  I use a 6X Weaver fixed mag scope on my 45-70.  But I didn't buy the 45-70 barrel with the express intent of using open sights.

Other than building some kind of metal pedestal that attaches to your barrel, and that will raise your sights up to the proper highth, I don't know what else to tell you.

Handirifle & Wlscott,
Thanks for the responses. You have confirmed what I expected. I kinda thought it would be one or the other. My wife has very high cheek bones and the thing fits her perfectly, but I don't plan to share the .45-70 with her. I'll have to admit I didn't even think about the stock situation until the action was long gone and I didn't think to inquire if I could elect to have a rail instead of iron sights, I guess I'll have both on that barrel now unless there's someone out there that would like to swap a standard stock for a monte carlo. Chickasaw Hunter; Let her shoot  the 300gr Win loads 3 times, and I garrantee you she will not want to share that load with you anymore. If she for some reason she likes it, then give it to her, because she is one tough lady. 20 rds. from the bench will leave bruise's that most of us have never had before.   Digger

Ditchdigger, as a native born Oakie I do understand you thought process, but also being a born coward I'll pass on your advice. I can't imagine what she'd do to me. She drew a hard to get elk license years ago and I set her up with my ole '06. Of course when I took her to the range I had her shooting some 110 grain bullets and when she went hunting I loaded it up with some 180's. I figured she wouldn't notice if she got a shot at an elk or it wouldn't matter then anyway. But fate was against her as was the weather and I never did have to find out how that plan would have worked. But I sure do appreciate your suggestion, even though I have not even the slightest intention of trying it.  :)

I agree.  With most calibers, it seems like if you go up in bullet weight, recoil increases.  But with the 45-70, the 300 grain loads kick something fierce.  I did the same thing with mine.  I started out with 300 grain loads, then tried some 405's.  The 405's are much milder than the 300's.

'Course, knowing myself, I'll be trying to push the 405's faster, until they kick the bejeesus out of me too

I just thought I'd update this thread for those of you who responded or might be following it. MSP Ret and I have made a stock swap. My stock is on the way to him as I type this. I've gotten his stock and it was everything he said. I've found no problems using the scoped '06 barrel on the standard stock and it does allow me to use the irons on the 45/70. I've enjoyed reading MSP Ret's posts and now I can say he's a good man to do business with. CH :)
