new traps?
« on: June 20, 2004, 04:34:33 PM »
I have #2 duke offset inside laminated for yote, 1.65 bridger for fox, I need coon traps....so here is the most debated question in trapping history....what is the best coon trap? I has thinking of a 1.5 but what brand? would I be better stocking up on as many little griz as I can get and maybe a few 1.5's? also chain length? shock springs? offset? laminated? inside, outside, or both? center swiveled? baseplated? dyed? diped? waxed? painted? stock? etc...

Nib,welcome to the forum. It would help a bit if you told us where you were from and also the type of conditions you will be trapping coon under.
Your #1 1/2 coils offer more versatility--but then a lot depends on where and how you plan to use them.\ Tom

The 1-1/2s should work OK, but if you are looking to get something specific then knowing the conditions would be helpful, too. I personally prefer to use #11 longs on coon, and I use those on both land and water. I like 1-1/2s for coon in water only unless I put the trap on a long chain with a drag at land sets. But, that's what works for me best and others may have some better techniques to apply those traps for you to other conditions.
The little griz getters are a decent dog resistant trap. Duffers and Coon Cuffs are a couple of other decent models. I own all three models and it depends on the set as to which one I prefer to use.
You mentioned the #2 Duke coils for coyotes. I just bought a bunch of these myself. The local Scheel's store had a crate of them clearanced priced out so I grabbed a bunch and plan to test them out this winter. I've never used them for coyotes exclusively, but they seem like they would hold OK to me. I like short chains with lots of swivels on my coyote traps, so first thing I did was remove the stock chain with the light universal swivel on the end. I added a heavier 4-way swivel right to the stock j-rivet attached to the trap itself, then only put 3" of welded machine chain, then another heavier 4-way swivel on the end. The extra stock chain and swivel off of that trap will go on some muskrat or coon trap in my collection that needs a chain upgrade.
Let me know how those #2s work for you this season. Anybody else ever tried Duke #2s on coyotes?
