Remington 1100 info? How much is it worth and........
« on: January 12, 2003, 08:31:25 AM »
Can barrels be interchanged like a pump?  I have been thinking of getting an 870  for Turkey hunting and also fitting it with a rifled slug barrel. A freind offered my a pretty good deal on an 1100, but I dont know if I can change out the barrels on a semi-auto.  Should I wait for the right deal on an 870?  Or should I jump on it for 200 bucks for the 1100?  If the barrels can be changed out on the semi-....are they a lot more expensive?  I sure would appreciate some help.  I can see doing much up-grading for my Mossberg 500.  I would rather have 'the right gun' before I start getting more barrels.
....make it count

Robert,

I know Hastings Barrel makes 1100 barrels, so I would assume Remington makes them as well  Only thing is you'll spend more on a barrel than for the 1100 gun.

Yes they are interchangeable the same way barrels on an 870 are. Unscrew the cap on end of magazine tube, pull off forend on the 1100 and then barrel. Insert new barrel, replace forend and screw cap back in place.

Remington makes a wide selection of barrels for it. Yes they do cost a bit more than for the 870.

The price is a super deal. I'd not pass it up.

Yes, the barrels interchange.  Yes, $200 is a super price.  You can find used 1100 barrels on eBay.  1100 receivers come in Magnum and Standard versions.  Both the 2 3/4" chamber barrels and the 3" chamber barrels will fit on either receiver, but you should not fire 3" shells with a Standard receiver.  A whole range of barrels are made to fit the 1100: fully rifled with rifle sights, rifled with cantilever scope mount, smoothbore with rifle sights (for turkey), smoothbore with cantilever scope mount (for turkey), vent rib barrels from 26" to 34", barrels with interchangable chokes.  Skeet barrels, trap barrels, Hastings even had a .50 Black Powder muzzleloader barrel to fit the 1100 that utilized the 209 primer.

The foregoing assumes you are talking 12 ga.  You cannot change to other calibers (20 ga, 28 ga, .410) by simply changing barrels.  There were even left hand 1100's, and the left hand barrel will not fit a right hand receiver.  Light target loads may not reliably cycle in a 3" Magnum barrel.
