Hello Fred,
Well, I finished the little golf ball mortar. Got videos and still shots out on firing it but I think you are talking about my bowling ball mortar. I have the barrel cut. I have the powder chamber cut and in the lathe now. I am hunting around for a big drill... I
hope to find a two incher so I won't have any boring to do in the chamber.
I need a two inch by two and a half inch deep hole in the powder chamber. Pretty slow going at this time also due to HOT weather and my
advanced age....74.

Thanks for the info Tim. I have a 13 X 38 Enco lathe which has a Morse
taper #3 in the tailstock. I also have a half inch Jacobs chuck to fit it.
I have to make a two inch hole two and a half Inches deep in the end of
my 6 inch piece of five inch shaft.
After cutting off my oxygen cylinder I have about a four inch flat and a two inch hole. I plan to chamfer off the mating surface of the powder chamber to get a good weld to the cylinder. Gonna weld about a two inch shaft across the end of the powder chamber for a trunion and probably use some metal for the sides.

I have a bit slightly larger than an inch but with a big Morse taper. I had thought about turning the shank down to half inch to fit my Jacobs. Then use a boring bar to bore out the rest of the way.
What do you think?

Let me look through the inventory tomorrow. I've got at least one or two bits of about 2" diameter on perhaps a #3 morse taper. I also built a boring bar on a 1" diameter 24" rod with a carbide insert and have recently picked up a couple of other boring bars of respectable size.

In general it's MUCH easier to drill as large as possible and then do finish work with one cutiting edge than to make an infinite number of cuts of small size with a boring bar.

I'd love to have (will probably build) a spade-lug drill to hold various diameters and a specially cut bit for bottoming out with a radiused corner and lead-in for a powder chamber.

My biggest drill is a 1-1/2" with a #4 or #5 MT.

Agree with you - cutting the powder chamber is a pain.

Don't forget to round the inside corners to elimininate the stress point.
