How much for a recoil pad job.
« on: June 24, 2004, 05:08:02 PM »
I just brought one of my rifles to a local gunsmith to have a Pachmayer Decellerator pad put on (that had to be ground to fit).  Cost was about $76.00.  I was thinking this was somewhat high, but have had no previous experience in this type thing.  What have your experiences been insofar as costs go?  This guy does good work, but I am curious.

If that includes the cost of the pad then that sounds about right. If the pad was extra then I think thats a bit high.   KN

L-winters,

Cost varies depending on locale but between $50-75 is about the going rate. Figure cost of pad and time for labor (shop may have a minimum time they charge e.g. 1/2hour whether or not 30 minutes needed) and you can arrive at the above figure pretty easily. I don't get too hung up if I pay a few extra dollars over cut rate if I know the gunsmith and his/her work has been uniformly good on past jobs and I am satisfied with the end result.

Have fun. The decel pad will likely make your firearm more pleasant to shoot and hence better accuracy in the field.

For normal install I charge $25-30.  More for a curved to fit pad and only $10 if a refinish is in the deal..  All are plus the pad costs..which can vary quite a bit.

Do these charges include shortening the stock to preserve LOP?

Yes as I consider that to be part of installing a pad. I will take off whatever the customer wishes or cut to a specified length.  Pads can be had in several thicknesses up to 1 and 1/2 inches(I think). One inch is sort of normal although I've been installing quite a few 1/4 inch rifle pads on the light kickers. Even 22 rimfires are candidates for the rifle pads. The rubber of the pad seems to make the rifle's butt stay put on your shoulder a bit better. Even installed thriple thick pad on an 1100 remington set up as a riot gun. The weapon was being built by a friend for his wife as a house gun and she didn't care for the recoil of the OO buck load.
