30-30 w/ 180grn
« on: January 12, 2003, 05:21:48 PM »
I don't have any suggestions, but I do have a question.  Why do you want to load 180 grain bullets, that were designed for much greater velocities in 30-06 - 300 magnums, in  the 30-30, a cartridge for which  the 180 grain bullet is totally unsuited?

New Snake Owner,
While you can load a 180 grain bullet in a 30-30 case you will find that there is little room for powder left. The velocity will be in the pistol range -
I can shoot a 180 grain bullet from a 14 inch barrel in .357 Maximum at 2000 fps. I doubt that you will keep that much velocity from the 30-30.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

Try Steves Data, if you want to shoot a 180 it's fine......

The 221 fireball was never intended to shoot a 240 gr .308 either, but it does so very well.  You can shoot any bullet you like with the proper load. Either use Steves Data or use a reloading manual data for 170 gr. bullet.  Reduce starting load by 10%. Work your way up slowly.  If you start getting flattened primers, back off 1/2 gr.
....make it count

tried every possible bullet that I could get my hands on, simply because it was the only rifle I had and I used a lee hand loader, I had the time of my life. just remember to be careful and cautious. I think my favorite was the 223 armor piercing in a 30 sabot. wow. vel closing in on 3800 fps.R
