Austin&Halleck Bolt Cleaning Procedure
« on: June 26, 2004, 04:52:59 AM »
Finally found a cherry Austin&Halleck rifle. What is the procedure to dismantle the bolt for cleaning and what is the proper lube for use in its assembly? This rifle has barely been shot and its clean right now and I'd like to be able to keep the bolt clean too. My Remington 700ML tended to collect pieces of primer and carbon around the inside of the bolt regularly. Does this happen with the Austin&Halleck too? I still hunt with blackpower. What is the best charge with FF Goex in this rifle? I see a lot of guys are useing 100-105 of triple7 with good results. I mounted a 2.5X Pentax on this rifle and will probably take it to the range this weekend.
Good luck hunting!

Lubrication Inside of the Bolt on Inline
« Reply #2 on: June 26, 2004, 06:11:46 AM »
Thanks Randy.
I saved the manual to favorites after I read it. Sounds like the longer heavier Barnes bullet is the way to go. I'm still wondering what is the best lube to use inside of the bolt. On my Remington the firingpin spring had a green coating and the spring tended to rust and grow corrosion even with cleaning and application of RemOil. Is there a better anti-corrosive oil for this application?
Good luck hunting!

Bore Storage Oil and Breechplug Lubrication
« Reply #4 on: June 26, 2004, 06:29:23 AM »
Thanks again Randy.
Would the Breakfree CLP be good to store the bore of the rifle with?
What about the breechplug threads? I do have Gorilla Grease but if I were to put together a kit with only the essentials to take on a hunting trip what would you reccomend?
Good luck hunting!

Breakfree is a great bore protectant, the best I've found. For breechplugs, any Mil-Spec 907E Anti-Seize is good (Never-Seez, etc.)

Thanks again Randy.
BreakfreeCLP goes on my list.
This stuff almost sounds like you could use it to scrub the bore with.
Elsewhere in this forum someone mentioned mixing equal parts of Murphy's Oil Soap, peroxide, and rubbing alcohol for cleaning the bore. Does that combination work? What do you use?

You can, but water w/ T 7 finished with Ballistol seems to work faster.
