New barrel syndrome... 260 vs 7mm-08
« on: June 27, 2004, 03:49:30 PM »
Hello all, I just picked up my new encore 209x50 stainless/ gray laminate last week and I'm extremely impressed.  I went w/ the Leopold quick release mounts so I can switch from the 3x9 to the 1x for muzzleloader season.  I've only had a chance to zero it at 50 yds so far but I like what I see...
My question is, I'm looking into another barrel for whitetails  and was looking for opinions/ insight on the 260 vs. the 7mm-08

It is kind of a toss up on the two.  I would prefer the 260 Rem myself since I tend to use a bit lighter bullets at a bit higher speed for my deer loads.  The 260 barrel will be a bit harder to find unless you are going for a custom barrel, TC only made them a year or 2 as a factory barrel - every once in a while I see one on Ebay, but not often.  The 7-08 overall is more popular and ammo is probably a bit easier to find, TC barrels in 7-08 are also easy to find and on occasion can be had at very reasonable prices.  I guess if you have time to wait a bit for one of the 260s to show up on Ebay, don't mind paying a few bucks more for a relatively rare item, and plan to handload I would recommend the 260.  If you are in a hurry, want to buy your ammo off the shelf, and are looking for a bargain price on the barrel go for the 7-08.  I am not implying that you can't get 260 ammo, just not as common, most of the factory loads out there come loaded with some of the "premium" bullets, and prices reflect that.  Hope this helps.

I'll probably be using factory ammo... after checking availabiblity and choices I may be better off w/ the -08...  Thanks for your help

I agree, go with the 08.  And when you order it get a Sims recoil pad.  You will be glad you did.

Go with the 7mm-08. That is what my Encore is in, and it shoots great! I would like to get a couple more barrels, but some bills have to be paid off first.

I have the 08 in a 22 inch Bullberry barrel.  I would definitely suggest the sims recoil pad.  Without the pad - the little 08 can be a real thumper (who would of thought?).  I use factory ammo and found that the federal premium (140 grain) shoots the best - usually just under an inch if I do my part.  I would like to handload some 120 grain for antelope - but I digress.

I got my daughter a 7-08 because of the variety of good hunting bullets available for it. The target shooters liked the 160 grain bullets so it will handle the heavier bullets as well as the lighter ones. I had good luck with the 140 gr partitions which are good for bear and elk, if not over 175 yards. She has a Remington Model 7 youth, evidently the TC must kick more as hers is not that bad of recoil.
