They say in any issue, there;s 5% pro , 5% con and 90% apathetic.We've bitched about the way the Liberals have manipulated the ''gun related deaths'' to try and convince the non firearms owning populace to support wasting the billion dollars they did, so today is the only chance to have our say.The liberals have spent the last 12 years telling us what's good for us- we get one day for us to tell them- voting day.
 However, lets not forget that a minority  government means that we will still be stuck with it, so, log off and get down to the polling station

The liberals with the NDP will ensure that the ''big lie'' continues- that spending a billion dollars registering sporting firearms ''saves lives''-even though their own committee proved otherwise.But- it buys votes and in the final analysis, that;s all that counts.
 The government contiues to make Canada a ''safehaven'' for  criminals on the run, simply because we refuse to send them back  on the grounds that if convicted, they might face the death penalty- and there are several examples of suspects spending 8 and 9 years here before we finally allowed the US  to extradite them, and only then after obtaining asurances that if convicted, they would not face the the death penalty[ and Canada accuses the US of ''interfering'' in other countries policies...]
 So- election day came and went, but nothing changed.

Firstly let me say that my wife, son and I voted for Randy White the Conservative MP for Abbotsford and if I got it right he won by about 16,000 votes.  
Now onto the gun registry........ I own a few rifles, shotguns and handguns and lately have been making a living as a Self Employed Free Miner prospecting here in British Columbia. I want to make it clear that I feel that my privacy was totally invaded by the gun registry, but also due to this registry I am now licenced to carry a handgun for protection of my life or the lives of others in remote area's of British Columbia. Before this program I would have had to go to the local police department apply to the police chief for a carry permit knowing that such a permit was almost impossible to get. Yes I voted Conservative but my worry if they where to win was that the gun registry would be dismantled and "boom" there goes my carry permit.  My dad has an old saying that he uses "It's an ill wind that blows no good" meaning out of everything bad someone has something good come from it. I hate the way that this registry has invaded my privacy but wouldn't want to get rid of it now at the risk of loosing my carry permit.

so... what is involved in obtaining a ''carry permit''?Can I get one to take a 22 revolver with me on hunting trips to pot grouse with?

Sorry but the answer is no you can't get a permit for a 22lr. The only way that you can get this permit is if you are working full time as a Free Miner (prospector). I believe that they will only give permits for 9mm/357 cal. and larger. I'm licensed to carry 10mm's and 45 colts.

Well, one consolation, my riding defeated the Liberal handily, (4000plus votes) and put in a former reform candidate Barry Devolin.

I believe that carry permits for poeple working in remote areas is something that your provincial government has done.  They could be issued anywhere in Canada, however, the other provinces have chosen to maintain a "hard line" on carry permits.  I don't believe we can give credit to the firearms act for these permits.  When I was younger and worked for a bank, I was issued a carry permit for use in protecting myself when carrying money on bank business.  A friend still has one that he originally obtained in the 1950's for personal security reasons.  He's probably one of the few people in Ontario who can legally be in the bush carrying a handgun (he just can't hunt with it).

 I do give credit to the Firearms registry because like I said in my earlier post, before this came about you had to go to your local chief of police and if he was anti-gun you just didn't get a permit. Now my permit is issued from the Firearms Central office in Edmonton where a set of fixed rules have to be followed by a Firearms officer. Yes we do have the Mining Act here in British Columbia which is one of the strongest Acts in Canada (because it is one of the first act's and over 150 years old) which may help us here in B.C. as well.

correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't we had a mandatory handgun registry in this country for well over 75 years?

You're right.  We've had handgun registry since the '30's.  This legislation provides for carry permits, its just that they aren't issued to "regular people" anywhere but in BC.  In Ontario, it was legal to hunt with a handgun until the '60's.
