Colt SAA - chambered in 41 Colt
« on: June 28, 2004, 09:51:37 AM »
My uncle has an old Colt SAA chambered in 41 Colt and I am trying to dig up some information on it.

So far as I can tell it is original - serial numbers matched - old grips - screws in good shape. The cylinder is WELL worn and a bit loose indicating abuse - peened cylinder knotches and deeply warn bolt grooves.

the serial number is 330,xxx - according to Ray Mebaum it was probably made 1913-1915. possibly with the long flute cylinder.

Unfortunately I dont recall the length of the flutes. It is in Colorado and I'm back in Indiana.

I have no idea and never even knew they chambered guns in 41 Colt. He also has a few cartridges with it. The cartridges have been in a gun belt for a few years and have some green to them. Some information on the value of the cartridges or advise on how to clean them up would be appreciated - assuming not wanting to clean them reall good but to just remove the green.

Any information or links anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated

A little rubbing alcohol on a rag will take care of the verdigris for now.  Then a letter to Cody Firearms Museum with description and serial number should tell you the rest.  Their standard research fee is $20 but in return you get the factory records on their letterhead (most valuable when selling to collectors).

If you want to shoot the gun, I suggest you find a 38WCF (38-40) cylinder for it, as 41 Colt is hard to find and hard to reload.  They use the same barrel....
