Beretta Stampede vs Uberti Cattleman
« on: June 28, 2004, 01:28:03 PM »
Anybody have any opinions about which one is the better gun? I am looking to buy another .45 lc six shooter as I have a Ruger Vaquero I really enjoy shooting. I like the looks of both the Stampede and the Cattleman but am unsure if one is actually better than the other for just target shooting.

I shoot some pretty stout loads in the Vaquero and I know I cannot do this with either the Stampede or the Cattleman. What is the hottest load that can be fired in these two models? Someone told me, I could still load a 250gr bullet up to 950fps with both models in .45lc. Is this true?

I have 2 Uberti 1873 Cattleman 5.5" barrels 45 colts for 3 years now. I have loaded them to 950fps with 255gr bullets and have had no problems with this loading in these guns. If I where to choose between the Stampede and the Uberti's I would go with the Stampede's only because they have a transfer bar safety. I have had problems with the safety system in both of my Uberti's which required me to send them to the gunsmith for repairs.

They are both made by Uberti so quality should be equal if not finish.  If you are carrying in the woods, take the Stampede with the transfer bar.  If cowboy action, you are only loading five anyway, buy the Cattleman.  The Cattleman is available in the antique finish, which looks like it is a 100 years old, Neat!  44 Man

Thanks for the replies guys! I looked at both models again last night in the gunshop where I work part-time and they are both pretty impressive for fit and finish. The are so much lighter than the Vaquero so I imagine the recoil would be somewhat increased but that really isn't a problem for me.

I love the .45 colt cartridge for shooting and reloading. Do any of you have a Bird's Head six shooter? What are they like? More recoil yet because of the grip?

With CAS loads you probably won't notice much difference in recoil due to the weight. The grip design sort of levels things out. As for the bird's heads I think it depends a lot on your hand size. As you know, traditionally loads were just loads and anything that replicates what was shot in these when there was no such thing as a reproduction should be a good load. Only in the last 75 years or so has an increase in power been percieved as needed (or possible) by the masses. I don't think many people before 1900 ever heard the term "disposable income" and were happy to have what they had. I guess a lot of us have always wanted something better since the beginning of time. That's progress and we should thank our stars that we live in a country where we can persue our dreams.

How I veered off course I don't know. My advise? Buy them all. Shoot them all......alot. Sell what you don't like or better yet, don't sell it because in 10 years you may try it again.
