Quality Camp Knife ?
« on: June 29, 2004, 06:34:13 AM »
I'm in the market for a quality all around camp knife. Something I can use around the camp as well as skinning chores. I'm thinking around a 4 inch blade or so. And under $200. Any suggestions ?

here's what i use... and a short story about it.  I killed a deer several years ago, and after cleaning it i left my knife on top of my truck when i drove off... somewhere on that farm it fell off... almost a whole year later, during bow season, i found that knife while hunting on that same farm in knee high grass.  It was still in great shape, and still had a good edge... i decided after that it must be my lucky knife...

Bond-Bailbond,
Look at the Voyager2 from ColdSteel. This is an excellent 6" bladed folder so you have the reach of a fixed blade with the carry safety of a folder. Edge holding ability is very good.

Well, the term camp knive to absolutely, positively correct refers to a stout fixed blade knife with a blade in the 6" to 12" range; more usually the latter.  It's kept around camp to handle the heavy chores like cutting kindling or taking a big animal apart at the joints, and anyother chore that comes up that requires some heft to it.   I know what you mean though; something in the line of a light utility knife that can skin, slice, whittle, cut light wood.....little light pounding maybe etc.  In that area, there are literally hundreds of knives out there.  4" is probably the most popular length for that type of knife and everybody and their brother makes at least one.  I'd look for certain materials and for workmanship rather than any one specific company.  Depending on your preferences in steel, the carbon blades in 1095, A-2, 52100, 5160 etc are good steels.  In stainless, 154CM/Ats-34(properly cryogenically heat treated), D-2,Bg-42, CPM-30V etc are also excellant.  For handles, I'd personally stay away from the delicate bone, stag etc, and go with micarta, G-10, maybe dymondwood, etc......those sort of materials which are both attractive and very strong.  I make my own knives and rarely use manufactured ones, so I can't truly recommend one.  For $200.00, there are a couple of well known custom makers, plus many others who might sell one for that price.  Bob Dozier, who uses D-2 exclusively, used to have a couple of his for around $160.  You might just do a search  under custom knives and check what the numerous purveyors are selling these days.  The most important thing is workmanship.  Just because a knife is listed using certain materials, doesn't mean the materials have been properly heat treated or fastened firmly to the tang.  Those who do those things, say so.   The others just mention materials, not methods

good knife but...If I was going for a camp knife I would opt for a little bigger one like the Cold Steel Trailmaster, if you stick with your $200 price you should have enough for the voyager too

If you're patient, I've actually found multiple knives on e-bay by my favorite maker for under $200.  There really is nothing like owning a good custom, hand made knife.

I have a Schrade 1400T Trail Boss that makes a heck of a camping and chore knife. I suppose they won't be made anymore but our Farm and Ranch store here still has several of them. It has a six inch Schrade + blade and the hard rubber Safty Grip. Its a tough SOB.
shot placement is everything.

Yea. He is still grazing. He doesn't move to fast :) . Quite a few years ago the city council was trying to draw more visitors to town. In those days most all the film in the country went back to Kodak for developing. One of the council members wrote to them and ask what the most photographed man made object in the USA was. They told him that the statue of Paul Bunyan and the big blue ox was the most pictured man made object. They went to work and made the big buffalo and I quess at the time, a lot of folks came to take snapshots of the worlds biggest buffalo. I don't know if you were over west or not but over west of Bismark is the worlds biggest Holstien cow. Its a wonder what intrests people.

Yup;
   We saw that big Holstein, but my recollection connected it with the town of Salem...guess I picked the wrong town as home for the Holstein..

   When we went through there were old thrashing machines parked on promotories every so far along the interstate..
   Were those just for decoration, or was it the farmer's way of celebrating his graduation to a combine?..LOL

If you do not opt for the custom knife, get a buck. I love there special model # 119. I had one in Montana and it did everything from butter toast to cutting tent pegs and I even field dressed deer and trout with it. with it. What a great knife!! My ex kept it and now uses it as a kitchen knife!!

I use an Old Timer 1400T trail boss for that purpose. I don't know if you can still get them but its a hell of a knife for 29.00. Oops I double posted that. I must not have enough work to do. :)
