Did you win some of the battles
« on: July 01, 2004, 09:56:45 AM »
I'm not a Canadian.  I am from upstate NY (I know don't rub it in).   I know after this election the Liberals still hold power in your beautiful country. I was just wondering being as ignorant as I am about how politics run up there if the Conservatives at least made some progress. I am just hoping the Conservatives at least gained back some ground. Please guys give me some hope. I miss hunting in Canada without all the hassles. I miss spring bear hunting in Ontario. I miss the old Canada. Please let me know that the political war is not over and that the Conservatives at least won some battles. Besides it then gives me hope for this country where the same battles rage. >John

We did make gains.  The Liberals are the largest party in the house, but they don't have a majority.  The party that they had hoped would have enough seats to create a combined majority (NDP) fell short as well.

The grits have 135 seats, the Conservatives 99, the Bloc (Quebec separatists) 54, the NDP 19 (supposedly socialists, but made up of agrarian and labour particularists as well) and one independent (a conservative who lost the nomination in his riding, won as an independent defeating the recognized conservative candidate).

This means the Liberals will need the support of the Conservatives, the Bloc or two opposition parties to get anything passed.  They've announced that they plan to govern in a minority position, so if the stars are right they could be defeated at any time (forcing another election).  Minority governments in this country have a history of seldomly lasting more than 18 months, and often less.

Being in this precarious position its unlikely that they'll do anything to force the issue and polarize the house.  As gun owners we're probably safe from any new form of oppression, but its unlikely they'll repeal anything either.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!

We increased some seats, but in reality- no- we didn't.The Liberal -NDP will govern  and none of the thinge we wanted will happen.Spending will increase- because the Liberals will have to go along  wi the NDP to staay in power. The NDP has stated they want inheritance taxes, paid for daycare and a social state. They both support ''gun registry''even though it has been proven 100% ineffective, apart from what it was originally designed for- buying the urban vote. The only firearms trade that continues unnabated is the tradse in illegal smuggled weapons thatare freely available .So, no, we didn't win anything at all, gave the Liberals a good run for their money, but that's all. It's more of the same.

what is not mentioned is the breakdown of the seats won. west of the manitoba border, we elected less that 10 liberals to ottawa. the remainder came from ontario, quebec and the maritimes. the west is not represented, and never will be, because of the voters in ontario. plain and simple.

I really think the threat of western separation may be out only resort. The Liberals will never listen to the common people, we don't have the money, and thats what they really want.

No, I do not want to see the break up of Canada,  :(  but I'd love to see the break up of the Liberal party.

there is a movement starting out here to constitutionally challenge the make-up of parlament to provide proportinal representation so that all areas of canada would be represented by the ruling party. if that fails, you just may see a separtist vote out here. considering all the money that alberta sends to ottawa in petroleum taxes, it would be intersting....

It's not about principle or even what's been proven[ the committee commissioned by the Liberals tabled their findings that the gun registry was completely ineffective and enormously over budget]It's all about votes- and the votes by sheer numbers are in the bigcity ridings in Montral, Toronto and Vancouver. The government full well knows this and the rural vote [ where by far most of the outdoorsmen and hunters live]is expendable. The NDP holds the balance of power and they have already come out in favour of the gun registry- inspite of factual evidence it doesn't work, and never will plus is a bottomless pit for tax dollars.
So- what did we gain? Nothing. They will continue to fund useless programs as long as they bring in the votes-and that's the bottom line.If they get too much flack over the escalating prices of implementing it- they will raise the fees.Non hunters don't care- why should they?
