Thinking of trading the 7mm
« on: July 03, 2004, 10:07:40 AM »
I have an opportunity to trade my Sako 7mm for a Sako 280.  I really like the 7mm and bought it for an all around rifle to hunt in Michigan and out west.  I have a 308 already, and wonder if  basically I am just duplicating ballistics getting the 280 with the 308.  I wont ever hunt anything bigger than elk.  I reload, so getting ammo is not a problem.  I need you guys to help me think this thing thru incase I am not thinking of some things.  Basically I understand that the 280 will have less recoil, use less powder and using the same bullet will shoot about 200 fps slower than the 7mm. I know , generally speaking, that the 7mm is a pound or so heavier than the 280.  I am not interested in comparisons of loading down the 7mm and loading up the 280 so they are withing 50 fps of each other.  To me that is somewhat illogical.  So what do you think?

No doubt your current Sako is a good rifle. I have hunted with a 280 since 1980. You won't go wrong with a good 280. It may just be the best balanced big game round available.

Other than a little thunder and lightning, a difference of 200 fps that would only really factor in for elk at ranges of 300+ yards, and rifle weight, these two calibers are nearly interchangeable. If they are both the same model, style, etc, then I would hesitate to trade a known commodity for an unknown one unless one of the above is a compelling reason.
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.

Good point.  The Sako I have is a Stainless/walnut, which I dont think Sako makes anymore.  It is a very pretty rifle.  It would be a step down in model to go with a 280 in blue/walnut.  Maybe I should just save for a couple of years and buy one outright.

Long,

While the .280 Remington is a good cartridge so is the 7mm Rem Mag..  I would not trade off what I know I got for something that I know very little about.  My answer would be to save up for another rifle.  Lawdog

Your going to hate yourself if you make this trade.Keep the 7mm and put
the .280 on layaway, if you can ,or borrow the money if you have to. 8)
