Whew  it  was  a  mad dash yesterday,  i  had  to  scope  my rifle  i  just  bought from a friend siught it in and do it  before 7pm  i started at  430pm.  got  to  the  range  at 530  and  wow  the  gun  is  incredible  Ive  been  getting  3 shot groups  a  little over an inch using factory winchester 150 gr power points,  I  normally  would  use Remingtons  but  our  wal-mart  does  not  have  any  just winchesters.  left  for  my  lease  and noticed  3  deer feeding  from my number 1 feeder  I  had  to  wade  in  water  almost  knee  high  to  get  to  my location  and  the  bugs  were horrible,  it  was in  the  high 90 s  when  i  got  into  the  stand,  about  1230 am  off  in  the  distance  i  heard some  grunts  and  squeals  so  i  knew  they were heading towards  the  baited feeder.  i mounted  my optronics  varmitblaster 250 to this rifle  and  i  felt confident  i  put  my  head  down  so  the  bugs  would not  get  to  me  any worse  when  i  seen  the  little  ones  run  out  first  a  total  of 8  pigs  showed up.  I  was  really  hunting this big boar  i  have  been  chasing  since December  when  I  lined  up  on  the  smallest  of  the  bunch   i  shot  him  in  the  shoulder  and  he  dropeed in his  tracks  .  this  is  the  first time  i  havce  had  a  factory cartride pebnetrate  a  HOg other than 45-70  or  375H&H mag  blew  an exit  wound  about 2 inches in diuameter

hey Joe,  if  you  want  ill  give  you  a  call  and  help  you  post  them  it  is  rather  simple  once  i  started doing it.  i  love  my  new  gun  it  is  my  first  Semi-auto hunting rifle  i have owned  and  i  wonder  why  i  never  tried  one  before  the  guns  shoots  great  actually  better  then  my beloved 30-30 and right on [par  with  the 270,  and  i  do  not  have  to operate  a  bolt  or  a  lever.  also  after  shooting  the  pig  i  stayed on target  and  easily  could  have  have  taken  another  one.  being  a  left  handed shooter  i  cannot  cycle  a  lever  or  bolt  that  fast.  to  bad  they  dont  make  onein 45-70  but  i  have  seen a  35 whelen  in  this caliber,  going  back  to my  days  of using  a 30-30  if  i  do  my  part  and  put  the  bulet in the right spot  i  shouldnt need  anything bigger

Howie, i have a question.  You speak about hot temperatures, humidity and insects..  correct me if i am wrong but i would assume it will take several hours before you have a chance to process and properly cool the meat after you shoot the pig. Doesnt that give any problems in these conditions ?

thanks !

Wilko  yes  you can run into  someproblems  with  heat  and  meat  if   the  hog  runs  off  and  you  have  to  look  for  him  in general  i  carry  a  chest of ice  depending on  the  hogs  size  i  will  skin  and  quarter him  right  there  in  the  bed  of  my truck  for  just  about  any  size  i  can  have  him  skinned and  quartered  in  around  an hour  ,  where  i  run  into  problems  is  if he  is  to  big  for  me  to  get  into  the  bed  of  my  truck  i  carry  a  chain hoist  with  me  so  generally  he  would  have  to  be  a  very  big  hog   for  me  not  to  get  him  in  the  truck,  you  should  see  me  loading  a pig  i  am  sure  it  is  funny.
some  people  may  not agree with the  way  i  do  hogs  but  it  is  so easy  when  you  are  doing  it  all  by  yourself  i  ream  the  arms  and  leges  and  stick  my  knife  uner  the  skin  and slice  it  up  to  the  nexk  i ream around  the nexk  and  make  a  long  slice  down  to  the  tail  then  i  peel  it  off,  then  i  get  the  back straps   and  get  the  quarters ,.

Ask as many questions  as  you  like,  that  is  what  i  am  here  for  i  enjoy heping  people  learn  more  about  this  awesome sport.  if  i  cannot  answer  something  i  am  sure  many  of  the  other gentleman  will  be  able  to.  yes  they  do  carry  parasites  i  would name  them or  at  least  the  ones  i  have  heard  of   but  my spelling  of  them  would confuse  you.   cook  wild  pork very done  i  have  heard  an internal  temp  of  at  least 180 degrees, also  it  is  a  good  idea  to  carry  latex gloves  these  hogs   most genrally  have  ticks  and  lice  so  protect  yourself  if  you  have open  wounds  attempt  to  cover them up  these  are  just  a  few precations  I  keep  bottled  water  a  first aid kit  and  rubber gloves in  the truck  at all times and  triple antibiotic ointment

That's a good eating hog right there

Yeah, with the heat (especially here in Texas) it's paramount that you get them cleaned and packed in ice or in a walk-in cooler ASAP.

Good advice on the gloves Howie. So many guys will neglect them as they feel it's more of a cumbersome than an aid.

I have a friend who is one of those miserable one gun hunters and lives in Wyoming.  He has shot everything except moose with it including some huge bull elk and the load he swears by is that 150 grain Winchester powe point out of a remington 308 M700.  He also likes the 150 grain Remington pspcl but says it is softer and won't use it on anything bigger than deer..

I agree  i  do  not  know  what   winchester did different  but  this  load penetrated  this  hog as  stated  before using other calibers other  than 45-70 and 375 H&H  this  is  the  first full penetration  i  have  i  have a  pic  of  a  150 gr psp core lokt  shot  from a 30-06  that  i  hit  a  200 lb  boar  with  that  turned inside out  the  distance  was 30  yards  it  resulted  in the animals death  but  with  pigs  it  is  important  to  get  plenty of penetration  this hog  did  not  take  2  steps  fell  right in his tracks  that  has  seldom  happens  unless  i  put  a  neck  shot on one

Howie,

You must be keeping the community in hog meat from all the hogs you are taking!  Great job and I'm sure the deer hunters are loving it too.

Are those the Wichester rounds with the gray polymer tips and the black coating on the bullets?

There a deadly combo...my brother in-law uses them in his Winchester model 70 in 270, and their devistating on Deer!!

I tried them in my Savage 111 in 7m-08 and counldn't get them to group as well as the 140gr remington Green Box.

those  were  just  standard power points   the  ones  you  are  talking  about  are  called power point plus  and  they  have moly coating on them  i  shoot  the  cheapest  thing  i  can  find  lol   and  around  hear   the  winchester  power points  are 13.00  a  box     if  they  would  have  had  remingtonbs  i  would  have  bought  them  but  since  these  shoot  so  well  i  will  keep  buying  them

entry wound  was high in the right shoulder  the  left shoulder  was blown out   we  washed  the  hog  before skinning  as  it  had  alot  of lice on him  i  shoot  them  in  the  shoulder area  forward     the  neck  and  head  are  good  choices   stay  away  from behind  the  shoulder shots

aklot of  wild  pigs  down  hear  favor  domesticated  pigs,  there  is  a  reason  for  this,  from  what  i  am  told  back  in  the  arely  days  people  used  to  let  there  hogs  roam  the  land  and  used  dogs  and  othe  means  to  gather  them,  so  alot  of  the  pigs  will  favopr  doemstic animals,  ive  heard   some  theories  that  say   once a  pig  has  been doemesticated  then  turned  loose  they  are  amuch  smarter  animal,  any of  the  [pigs  i  hunt  are  fair chase  and  i  assure  you  that  you  will not  be  able  to just  throw  a  handfull of  corn  down  and  they  come.  i  have  seen  some  odd  colors  of  pigs    but  around  this area  the  big  boars  all  have   black  and  some  white  in  there  legs  so  i wonder  what type  of  cross  they  are,  one  way  to  tell  if t hey  are  feral  or  russian  boars  is    domestic  pigs  have  an  extra  little  tooth  on  the  right  hand side  of  there jaw  russians  do  not  have  this

I'm kinda surprised you got that kind of penetration of those power points.  How far away was your shot?  My brother once used my 7mag on a deer/hog hunt.  I was away in law school at the time, and he doesn't know much about bullets and ammo.  I told him to get 160 Noslers, but he got 150 power points.  To make a long story short, he shot at a 250lb+ hog about 60 yards away, and he said that the hog ran in the wide circle and took off.  They went to where the hog was hit, found chunks of bone and blood, but they never found that hog.  It was a shoulder shot (which I told him not to take, but I guess he got excited) so I definately know that the power points didn't penetrate.

hey Zachary  long time no see  how  are you??   well  to be honest  i  can understand  why  a  150 gr power point  out  of  a  7 mag  failed  the difference  being this   a 7  mag  150  starts  out  at   better  than 3200 compared  to  2850  with  the power point in 309  the  bullet  holds  together  better  because  the  velocity  is  not  as  fast  anytime  you  break  the 3,000 fps   mark  it  will  take  a  strong  bullet  such  as   the partition   X bullet fail safe  grand slam   premium, bullets  but  this  cheap  ammo  works  well  when  loaded  to modest specs.  i  know  you  know  alot  about  guns  and  all  and  i  totally respect  you  and  your  beliefs  i  have followed  you  since  i  have  been a mamber.  but  i  do  not  use  premium bullets  i  use  the  cheapest  i  can  find  at  wal-mart  either  core lokts   or power points,    i  do  not  shoot  magnums   except  for  the 375 H&H  i  once  had  and  then again  i  used  Reminton 300 gr  and  got  complete penetration  on a  pig  over 300 lbs   but t hen again  you  are talking 4,200 foot  punds of  energey.  other  than  the  45-70    and  375  this  was  the  first bullet  i  have  ever  had  that penetrated completely  through  a  hog, granted  he  was not  overly  big.  but  the  ranges in  which  i  shoot  hogs  are generally  bow  shooting range30  yards   is  about  norm  i  may  stretch  it  to  50  yards  when hunting  a  box  stand.  the  biggest  hog  i  took  down  was  one  well  over 400lbs  and  he  fell  to  a  single  shot  from a  factory core-lokt  170 gr 30-30  and  had  adequate penetration.  i  think  for  hogs  if  using  a  7  mag  if  a  premium  bullt  is  not available  then  use  a  175  gr corelokt  or  other  similar non- premium bullet  will  work just fine  let  me  know what you think

Hi Howie,

First off, thank you for the kind sentiments. :D

As for the plain jane 175 core-lokts in the 7mag, I think that I used them a long time ago on a hog.  The shot was about 100 yards away under a feeder, and the shot was behind the shoulder - where there was no grisle plate to really stop it.  Yes, the bullet did fully penetrate, but the hog was only about 100 pounds - no more.

Sure, the heavier the bullet, the less the need for it to be premium.  And if shots are under 100 yards, then it really doesn't make that big of a difference.  So if i use 160 partitions, then the equivalent might be 175s.

For hogs, I don't think there is a better bullet than the Barnes X, or now the new TSX.  That's the ONLY bullet I now use for hogs, especially the larger one.  The only exception is that I have also have a .375H&H and I use 300 grain Partitions - what a load!  Never had one run yet! :)

i agree  with  you about  premium bullets,  lol  i  just  cant  fork out  the  extra$  for  them  if  i  were  a  hunter  only hunting them  1 or 2 times a year i  would  use premium bullets  since  i  am  done  with reloading  and  spend  most  every day in pursuit  of  these fine animals, i spend alot of time at the range also  sometimes  a  mad  dash  to  get  a  little  shooting  in  then  go  hunt  other  than   the  308  i  always  use  the  heavyest bullet  for  the  calber  i  can  like  in  270  i  use 150 30-30  i  use  the  170.  i  think  if  i  used  a  100  gr  in  270  and  took  shoulder  shots  id  have  them runningo0ff  everywhere  using  factory   remingtons  the bullet  was  not  designed   to  penetrat

When Markc and I went hunting  I shot my first hog with my new .280 Remington. Used the standard 150gr. Remington PSPCL. Bullet entered through the ribs and proceeded through one lung. clipped the spine, passed through second lung, then exited through the far shoulder. I think it barely was able to exit because the exit hole was much smaller, maybe 1/2", than it should have been. Exit hole on a deer I shot was near two inches.

Good to see you're still gettin' those East Texas Hogs, Howie.
