Just reloaded my first batch of STI sabots.Had a hard time getting the roll crimp part down. Read the directions about the crimp but it did not come out nice.The top and sides of the crimp looked a little chewed up and   melted.Also the tops were uneven. Besides all this the accuracy potential at 100 yards was great.About 4 to4.5 inch groups with open sights and a marlin bolt slug gun.Any pointers on the crimp technique would be very helpful. sounds like your using used hulls with fold crimp.. that would be kind of ugly??..   i just went thru a roll crimp crises a few weeks ago.. fired the roll crimper and hired a mec.took 2 weeks to get it to stop crushing hulls. came with a 8 point fold hooked up for 16 gauge,, not good the 6 point is better for 16 gauge in my circumstances..  (i hope all the i havent been dotted yet.. still got to try it at the trap club..  . if you want slugs or sabot i suppose your stuck with the roll crimp..  keep at it and keep asking questions.. youll get it..  search out some more shotgun lists also to help.. try accurate loading forums and  shotgunworld.com.. thisis a great list too.. the more the better tho when your looking at strango problems.. and it sounds like your like me, into the strange stuff.. good luck dave..

o, i forgot,,  check powder charge so you dont get a double charge, easy to do in shotgun..  i would use a dowel or some such and put it in each shell after putting in powder and seeing that is comes into the hull the same depth to a mark or i use a finger for a depthstop.. ..  when up at the range one day i look down the line and saw guy go and pickup his barrel out in front of the bench..  then i noticed a piece of stock between him and me.. and his scope was laying behind him.. not a good day at the range for that guy.. dave..

BP roll crimper? I know their little video shows a hand drill, but I get a WHOLE lot better crimps using a drill press. My new hulls were melted and chewed when I tried a hand drill. Fiocci hulls seem to work best for me. Activ hulls are also good, if you can find them.

ct kid: been playing around with the STI sabots this summer and i had the same trouble with the roll crimp. I'm using a small drill press @ 600 rpm-a bit too fast- and chewing up the plastic at the edge of the crimp. tried different oils for lube, no luck; grabbed the bottle of dawn dish soap on a whim and put a couple of drops on a q-tip and applied it to the outside of the hull where it will be crimped and the crimp head, and presto, perfect crimps. as for the uneven crimp, a drill press helps, devise some method to hold the shell vertically in line with the crimp head. also make sure they are all to the same  length when crimped. the accuracy and penatration of these slugs is awesome, getting one hole groups at 50 yds. from a rem. 870 with rifled barrel.

Try using new hulls that do not have a skived mouth. Either Precision Reloading or Ballistic Products sell new plastic hulls that are not skived.

I use new paper hulls from Graf & Sons with roll crimps. Works great in a drill press. Hand drills are plagued by uneven results.

Are you sure that you are leaving enough room above the shot and over-shot wad? Leave at least 1/4", maybe a tad more

I had the same problem when I used to make up loads with the old BRI reloading sets. The problem is don't try to make the deep roll crimp the factorys do. When I shortened the amount of case mouth above the top of the sabot to 1/4 to 5/16 and warmed them with a blow dryer, they rolled perfectly. I'd say 19 out of 20 using a drill press.
