Help! Need suggestions. For G2 30/30
« on: July 05, 2004, 05:52:27 PM »
I am considering a 30/30 barrel for my G2 and would be using it to hunt whitetail here in Louisiana.  This would be my first experience with a pistol configuration as I only have an Encore 7m08.  I think a pistol would be great in those tight spots up in a climbing stand and most of my shots are a fairly close range.  My questions are how is the recoil, and what length and type barrel would be best for what I want. I would be shooting reloads so I can use a wider selection of bullets not offered in factory ammo, any suggestions, what works for ya'll.

I did not find the recoil all that severe in either the 10 or 14 inch lengths.  I found .44 magnum in the Contender much mure punishing.  You give up a lot of velocity in the 10 and hardly much in the 14.   I prefer 10's mostly for the handling but if you want the velocity, go with 14.

well if u are shooting the 7-08 an reloading
i would go with the super 14 7-30 waters i shot the 30-30 like this but i hear alot better things about the 730 espicaly if u are reloading an its still the 30-30 brass so if u have some layen around or you can find tons of it laying at ranges
an its a little less of a kick an better shooter

I found the kick of my 12" 30 30 to be more manageable than my 4 " K frame 357 mag smith.  My barrel is a Super 14 the previous owner shortened and recrowned.  The recoil is no harder than my .222 barrel.  A little more muzzle lift, but no more hit to the hand.

My longest shot from my deer stand is about 40 yards.  I have a 2 power Burris scope on my barrel, and it is about perfect.

Good luck!

since you reload, there is also another option. midwayusa has(for now) 14" 30-30 Ackley Improved contender barrels. lee precision has inexpensive dies, that you can get at midwayusa.
it's a great barrel, and you can still shoot factory 30-30 ammo thru it. after firing, the case takes on an improved shape with 40 degree shoulders. you then reload with 30-30AI dies.
mine is very accurate, and i killed 2 deer with it last season. recoil is very tolerable.
here's an article on it. http://www.handgunhunt.com/article_index.html

see article #46

at short ranges, you'd likely not notice a lot of difference, but it is really one fun gun!  absolutely love it, as do several others shooting it. 8)
