i see M/N bolt bodies on E-bay that have the turned down handle. some are pulled from M91/30 snipers and some i think are home made conversions. whats the rule when swappinhg parts like this between the different models? i would think it should fit my M44, but would there be any problems like improper headspaceing?

You have two questions.

One has to do with headspacing.  The 7.62x54R headspaces on the rim.  That is more forgiving.  If you are really really concerned about headspace, there is a "scotch tape" shade tree method of determining "headspacing," I saw in another post and reposted in a discussion on Japanese rifles

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=34045

The second question has to do with bolt interchangability.  Since you are concerned about this, why not just go to the internet Numerich Corp website and purchase an M44 curved handle, bolt body for $21.30 plus shipping and handling.

http://www.e-gunparts.com

Part 291700E   They also list the M38 at part 291700 B and the 1891/30 as part 291700 C.   You might call Numerich and ask them what the difference is between bolts.

Good luck

bolt bodies are interchangeble for all MN variants. Keep the original bolt head, as that is important for headspace. Check the headspace at least with a tape.

Don't waste your money on the numrich bent bolt its just a straight bolt that is bent down and it looks silly.  Its not the longer sniper bolt your looking for. I just ordered one for $69 from "buymilsurp.com" its the right one.  Your headspace won't change because your still using the same loc up front piece your only changing the center part with the handle it has nothing to do with the headspace.

Go to;  buymilsurp.com,  then to online store,  then to Mosin Rifle Accessories then schroll down its right there.

I was wanting a 91/30 sniper rifle and since most of the ones are fakes today on the market for $500 to $750 I decieded to build my own.  I bought a 91/30 for $79,  a scopemount for $85 and the right bolt for $69 so its a fake but a lot less than the fakes on the market.   I just wanted  a  scoped 91/30 for a shooter.

The bolts on Mosins are interchangeable, BUT sometimes you can not release the bolt for cleaning on different models without taking the whole receiver and cartridge box apart.

My 91/30 bolt will change with my M44 and will work perfectfly.  However, when attempting to pull the M44 bolt to clean the 91/30, it would not come out.  Had to disassemble the entire trigger works and cartridge magazine from the receiver to release it.  One good thing though, I learned alot about the inner workings of the 91/30.............

Does your trigger group sit lower than the stock?? It may need to be shimmed to make the trigger group sit lower because the bolt should always come out or be able removed without touching the trigger group. To check this I would loosen the trigger group about 1 turn from snug and place or hold the rifle horizontal then try to remove the bolt by pulling the trigger to make the sear drop down so it will pass over it and the bolt should come out.  Some of these guns did have shims inside the rear screw between the stock and the trigger group.        BigBill
