7mm-08 Load
« on: July 06, 2004, 12:11:02 PM »
I just tried some loads for my 7mm-08 Handi. I used Barnes 140 gr. Triple Shock HPBT bullets, over 42.0 gr. of Varget powder with Federal Large Rifle Primers. Now I only shot at 50 yards so far, but I got a 3 shot group measuring .330" center to center. This was using a cheap BSA 4X32 scope. According to the Hodgdon Annual Manual, these should be moving at about 2800 FPS.

BB, that load sounds like a keeper if you can duplicate the results with regularity!!!!....<><....

I actually prefer the 7mm-08 over the .270.  Its, I think, the same for the .308 and the .30-06.

Reloading those premium bullets...  Can you load a box cheaper than buying one (of the same bullet type?).

These bullets go for about $27 a box of 50 which is very pricey as far as bullets go, but I don't know if any manufacturer even loads with them. If they do, I'm sure they would charge at least the $27 for a box of 20 loaded cartridges.

I was able to figure my cost for 20 loaded cartridges to be $14.66. That's assuming a 5 reload case life, which I can probably use them much more than that. I was able to find only one manufacturer, Federal,  loading Barnes X bullets, and none loading these more expensive Barnes triple shock X bullets. The Barnes X bullets are only available in five calibers, ranging from $29.99-$37.99 a box. My cost, $0.73 per cartridge. Federals cost, $1.50-$1.90 per loaded cartridge. The Barnes triple shock X bullets cost me $7.00 more per 50, than the cheaper Barnes X bullets Federal is using.
