Ultra Varmint Scope rail??
« on: July 06, 2004, 08:15:34 PM »
Ok, I received the .243 and .25-06 barrels and my sb2 frame today, trigger is now at ~3lbs, smooth and crisp, lookin good so far. But, I have a question for you experienced pros. The new barrels don't have the set screw in the unsupported end of the rail as the rail does on the .223 bull barrel that came with the rifle. I've read that others have done one of two things, (1)don't mount the forward ring on the hanging part of the rail  and/or (2) bed the hanging part of the rail. It seems to me that if the hanging part of the rail is bedded or has that set screw in it, it will affect the barrel harmonics as the barrel gets warm when shooting and it will also rise as the barrel expands when it gets warm and may affect POI. I'm probably all wet here, so enlighten me with your experiences. Thanks, Tim

I didn't like the cantilever look, so I shortened my rail back to the last notch that makes decent contact with the barrel, and use that for the forward ring.  It's easy to do, the rail is anodized aluminum, so a hacksaw will do it - I used my abrasive cutoff wheel, but not everyone has one of those laying around their shop ... A little flat black spray paint, and it was remounted.
