shooter,
Way to go!  8) Tell me a little about your 45! I also decided to take a bear this coming spring with a pistol...44 mag Ruger S.R.Hawk w/ 7 1/2" bbl. I do bait here and purchased this last August for this hunt specifically! Have run well over 200 rounds through "her" already with the idea of gaining acclimation and proficiancy. My only problem now is that a friend (enemy to my pocketbook) has seen to it that I get totally outfitted with a new bow etc.! I'm afraid that a major "fish or cut bait" debacle is on the way! Naw, I'll use the Ruger!  I have not decided to scope it yet; I like the idea of some of the new open sites available that allow for low light use. The longest shot I could imagine would be 50 yards or so...it's really thick where I hunt! My stand will be less than 25 yards out. BTW, do you use a scope?
best,
bhtr

Put a scope on it Bearhuntr

bearhuntr,

In my opinion, put a a good scope on your gun. I would not be concerned with a distance as the issue for the scope as much as I would be concerned about the need for light to see your iron sights.

You likly will be hunting in woods with a heavy canopy. Late in the day, when most bear are taken over bait, having a scope could mean the differance between taking the shot or not. In low light, trying to find your iron sights is a real challenge.

I had three occasions to shoot bear over bait in Maine. All 3 times, without a scope I could never of shot because of how late it was and how low or near dark it was.

A good scope could close the margin. It will at minimum, give you the most amount of shooting time.

Something to consider when trying to decide on a scope or not.
