Sako 75 Scope Mounts

I currently have the Opti-Loc {low} on my Sako and they are still a little too high. What are you alls opinion on a quality mount that will get scope down closer to the barrel. The scope is 3x9x42. Warne, Talley, Control, Leupold or others I don't know about. Give me the goods ; bads and whatever else. I am a novice when it comes to scope mounts. Thanks

Talley are arguably the best, but then again the Leupold dual dovetails are also excellent.  The dovetails are not available on the Sakos, but Leupold's Sako rings are still excellent.

Go to Leupold's website and go to their scope mounts selector.  You can match a leupold scope to a particular rifle and see what ring/mounts are available.  Just see if there is a leupold scope with a 42mm objective and use that as your basis.

Of course you could always call Talley and they could help you.

I don't know much about the conetrol, although I have heard that they are good mounts.  They used to be used on Weatherby rifles, but now weatherby offers Talley mounts.

Warne are also great, but heavy.  Please note that Warne's gloss is crap.  I have ordered a few rings in gloss and the finish just flaked off.  I sent it back and the same thing happened.  I haven't had any problems with their matte rings or their silver finish rings though.

I have Leupolds on 3 Sako rifles.  Never had a problem with them and would always look at them 1st.  But I do not have experience with the others you mentioned.

I've got two Sako 75's. On one I've got the low Optilocks. On the other I've got Conetrols. I bought the Conetrols specifically to lower the scope and I'm much happier with these. They can be a pain in the hind end to get a scope mounted in, but once mounted, it is a rock solid setup. My scope bell now sits about 1/16" above the barrel (perfect in my opinion) instead of about 3/8". Conetrol would be my choice on the Sako 75.

Talleys are nice too, I've got them on my pre-64 Win 70. However, I dont' think they'll solve the problem of lowering the scope. I tried Leupold's at one time, but I didn't like em'. I never felt like they were solid enough. Millet makes mounts for the Sako also, but these are the absolute worst in my opinion.

Sako also offers an extra low ring..DNR probably has them in stock or Accuflite. I have owned conetrol rings and mounted them on weatherby, remington and winchester rifles but the last batch I ordered were simply not well machined very sloppy.  Based on that and the Sako dovetail reciever I would stick with Sako Opti-locks. They have to be the most rugged rings made anywhere.

I'm surprised to hear the Conetrols were sloppily finished. The ones I have on my 75 are probably the most nicely finished mounts I've ever had. They look terrific and the bluing matches my rifle perfectly. The Optilocks are nice alright too, but I certainly can't agree that they are the most rugged anywhere, especially considering those awfully soft ring screws they use. I do really like the synthetic inserts, however.

I was thinking about replacing the Optilocks on my other Sako with another set of Conetrols to achieve the lower scope mount I prefer, but if Sako has extra low rings, that might just be the way for me to go. It would cost less I'm sure. Thanks for mentioning that, I wasn't aware they made these. Must be something they recently came out with. Now, if they'd just come out with better screws with torx heads instead of hex heads. Then we'd really be in business.

Well, I checked out the specifications for the extra low Optilock rings on Sako's website. They're less than a tenth of an inch lower than the lows (.08" to be exact). Really not much of a difference at all.

Hmm not worth it if that is all they are.. I am going to send mine to a friend that has a couple of prototype machinists working for him . This should be a piece of cake for these guys to machine down compared to some of the stuff they work on .
