Well I just picked up a 98K, parts gun in 308 with an extra stock. The safety does not work correctly, very hard to go from "Lock" to the upright position. With the barrel pointing away from you, that would be from left to straight up. Any Good ideas???
What is a good source for general info, this is a gun I will modify, scout rifle some day hopefully.

That difficult safety is probably a result of indiscrimnate parts swapping. You said it was a parts gun?

The standard Mauser wing-type safety is: left = safety OFF, up = safety ON, and right = bolt LOCKED, safety ON.

Disassembly of your bolt should reveal the problem.. probably mismatched camming surfaces or possibly a damaged safety cam. They are not difficult to refit using stones and abrasive cloth.

Try the Gun Parts Corp web site. The Internet has a wealth of info on fixing, sporterizing, and modifying the M98k. Try a search for "Steve Wagner's Pages" for some good Turkish Mauser 'smithing ino.

I had a 98k mauser that had safety problems when I would put the safety fully on then pull the trigger then take the safety off it would fire the gun. The distance between the two mating parts of the sear is wrong due to the thickness of the safety lever. The thickness of the safety lever determines the distance between the two mating parts of the sears. The sears must have a small space between them so the trigger can't release it if it should happen to get pulled while the safety is on. I corrected it by ordering a replacement "used" safety lever from numrich gun parts. We do have to fit the new lever to the bolt I filed the lead in ramp of it just a little and it works fine. I believe this happens by missmatched parts too. My orginal safety lever is very thin in the thickness of the body. I also notice when we put the safety on if we watch the firing pin move back just a little so it moves just a little off the sear. I've only had this problem with one of my 98k mausers it was on my $20 project gun.

NOTE: I also purchased the LOW SAFETY LEVER to clear the scope from numrich gun parts and it turned out to be higher than the orginal safety lever. The orginal used safety lever worked fine with the high see thru scopemounts from Samco Global Arms.

Thanks guys,
I looked at it some more- The cam on the safety is too far to the rear, it has a hard time catching the firing pin to move it to the rear when the safety is engaged. I really like the standard safety, very quick to flip to the Left, off, position when bringing the gun up to fire. Should make a good scout rifle, once I firgure out how to deal with the rust.

Do what John said take a file and gently put a small chamfer on the bottom edge where the cam of the lever engages the firing pin slot then stone/sand paper it smooth. This is the process for fitting a new/different safety lever to the gun. Just go slow and fit it. BigBill

Well I got around to doing the work, had alot to take off to make it work. I won't tell y9ou that I used the dremel :wink: Reassembled the bolt many times to check progress. Finished using a sanding disk and poslished after that.
Need to refinish it yet.
