7 x 64 Brenneke?
« on: July 09, 2004, 05:24:25 PM »
A local gun shop has a stack of handirifles in 7 x 64 Brenneke for $150.

I've always liked the 7x57 mauser.... is this a good deal or should I just walk away? I can't find much information (in English) on the 7x64 Brenneke. What is it? And why did NEF make a barrel for it?

This looks like a good buy. You can easy make 7x64 brass from 280 Rem.
This is a good cartridge nearly the same as a 280 Rem. Fred M.

10th edition Cartridges of the World has this to say about it:

Balisticlly the 7x64 is very similar to the 284 Winchester and cases available from Remmington,Federal, and Norma...seems like a ok round to me...the 280 would be easier to get brass for and easier to get factory loads for  it and have a little bit better ballistics too...but at $150.00 the price is definatly right to get one...and since NEF doesn't make them anymore...go for it if you like it...

That sounds like a great price to me. I believe that mine was $190 a trip to a good gunsmith that can do a rechamber to 280 AI. without having to set the barrel back (impossible on a handi) you would have as good a cartridge as any you can get in a handirifle. all of the 7x64 rifles that I have seen have a 24 in. barrel a 2 inch improvement over the 270 win or 30/06 and much simpler than the 280 rem to rechamber.

FWIW, I feel the 7x64 walks all over the 7mm Mag, with much less "muss & fuss". I have owned one, years ago, and of all the rifles I've ever sold, this is the one the one I regret most.
Get that rifle while getting is good!
It is a great round!
I wish that offer came my way. There would be no hesitation whatsoever!
Respectfully, Russ
