Ruger makes a bolt actino .44 Rem Mag and previously the Remington 788 bolt action was chambered in this cal.

Anyone have any experience with them? Thoughts? Opinions? Mud to sling?

I had a 788 in .44 mag. one and I really liked it. Never ran any ballistics on it but it was a fun gun and I am sure a 100 yard deer gun.

Unemployment forced it to go 15 years ago. :cry:

Here's a couple of posts from another forum. Seems the Ruger used in these tests was the most accurate and had the least feeding problems.

Hey,

I owned a Ruger 77/44. It was blued with a walnut stock, they also make this gun in stainless with a synthetic stock.

I bought mine because I wonted the smallest carbine I could fine for Whitetails out to 150 yards. After hunting with this gun for a season I realized my Remington Model - 7 in 7mm-08 was a little lighter, compact and more versatile so I sold the Ruger.

I killed two six pointers with mine. One was at 110 yards and both dropped within 5 to 10 yards of were they had been shot. The Ruger was ACCURATE ! I only shot Winchester 250 Partition shells out of it , but they would group around 1" 3-shot group at 100 yards. It was a nice rifle. ( I should have kept it, its rare you find a gun that would shoot as good fresh out of the box.)

I would probably limint my shots to 140 - 150 yards. That fat bullets starts to slow down rather quick.

I've got one of the Rugers, bought it with the intention of having SRT Arms install their integral supressor when I can afford to have it done. Stock, it's plenty accurate for hunting and is nice and light to carry around all day. The twist is slow enough that you'll want to limit it to 265gr. bullets or less, but it really works well with 240's. The supressed version is a real fun thing though - click, hear the bullet fly downrange, then thump as it hits the backstop. With subsonic loads it's eerily quiet and well worth playing with.

:biggun: I've got the Ruger in SS. I really like the look of this rifle. I replaced a mini 30 with it. The action is very smooth.I've tried a lot of different loads in it and some shot poorly and others with fair groups. I took it to northern WI deer hunting this fall and its a great light rifle to haul around. I didn't shoot any deer but that wasn't the guns fault.
Some loads I made shot well but wouldn't fit in the clip. That's the only thing I didn't like about it.

I had two 44 mag rifles once upon a time. The first was the 788 Rem. and it was a bolt. The second was a Ruger Carbine semi auto, very light to carry and accurate to 75 yards (hitting tin cans on a fence post) and sure enough a dog gone good whitetail deer gun in the woods. Something about that caliber, it just drops deer quick, don't ask me why cause I been scratching my head since the first deer.

It never shot clean through those deer, but always left a very big entry hole and put all the energy to the animal. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of them for something more powerful, yeah right......a big dummy I was for getting a 7mm mag for hunting whitetail deer with back in those days. :eek:
