I just bought some .490 round ball for my Renegade. My barrel twist is 1 to 48. I also got some Ox Yoke .015 lubed patches. I have only shot maxi-balls, maxi- hunters and Hornady great planes bullets in it. What is a good starting load for Goex FFg? I have never shot round balls in my Renegade or any other ML. Also any pointers with round ball shooting would help.

I have a number of TC Hawlens with 1:48" and 1"66" barrels.
I use Hornady .490's with .015" prelubed cotton patches for range loads of 50-60grns Goex FFFg, but need the thicker .018" prelubed pillow ticking for no patch burnout, best accuracy, etc when using hunting loads of 80-90grns Goex FFFg.

PS: The accuracy of both twists are virtually equal so don't fall for the old wives tale that 1:48" twists don't shoot round balls accurately as they most certainly do...enjoy!

I did not find the 50cal Renegade listed in Sam Fadala's Blackpowder Loading manual. However, T/C 50cal m/l 's seem to run in the 70-100 grain range. I shoot with 90gr 2F Goex in my 50cal underhammer.
I would probably start with 80gr of 2F to sight in and look for accuracy, then move to 90gr and MAYBE then to 100gr.

I use round balls most of the time in my Lyman Deerstalker with the 1 in 48" twist. The big thing with them is don't try to push them too fast. I get very good accuracy with 80g of Goex ffg, or Pyrodex rs. Accuracy realy falls off when I use 90g of powder. Good luck.

I shot 95gr 2f Goex and a .535 round ball in my TC hawken for deer/elk, it was a very accurate load. Don't hesitate to go up in 5gr increments, you can easily miss the magic load if you do 10grs at a time.

I get exceptional accuracy from my .50 renegade using the same ball and patch with the addition of a wonder wad and 70 gr. fff.

Do you put the wonder wad over the powder or over the ball? If it is like loading for my BP cartridge, the wad goes over the powder.

The wad goes over the powder same as your bp cartridge. It keeps the patch from burning, allowing the use of more powder and compensates for the relatively shallow rifling of renegade barrel. For a second shot the wad makes faster loading because it clears away the fouling making the patched rb easier to load.

Thanks, I bought some of the 50cal. lubed felt wads. I will give it a try and see how the Renegade shoots.
