Just back from shooting my Black Hawk 45 long colt. loaded with 16 gr /2400 and 255gr cast I put 7 slugs thru one hole at 25 yds. This was with no vise just resting on a rolled up jacket ontop of the bench.
I'll never go back to open sights as my eyes aren't good enough for it anymore, so it's a 2xscope from here on in. and with results like this afternoon's I am now wondering why I didn't scope it years ago.

I started shooting scoped handguns in 1968 or 69, but today I still mostly shoot iron sights on handguns. I`ve got a .357 max. 15 in. barrel with a by-pod and a 4x scope that will take deer out to 200 yrds. +, but for a walk-around deer gun, I still like my single action revolvers. Also for a CCW gun I like my 629 S&W with iron sights. Scoped handguns have there place, but not when your trying to get off a fast shot. I do agree with you that 2X is about the best you can do for power on a handgun, more power is nice for bench shooting where you can take all day getting off a shot, but for the field more power means smaller field of view and a harder time finding your target.

Sounds like you have found the right combination. :-D It's nice when everything works out. I wish I could still use open sights, but...you know how that goes. I have personal defense guns with open sights, but have had to scope my hunting guns. Everything still works well,on me, except for my eyes.

I know of several tricks for seeing iron sights for those of us over 40. The particular one I am using now is to have +1.25 diopters added to the distance part of the right (shooting side) lens in my pistol glasses. This makes the front sight tack sharp. I still have sharp distance vision on the other side. Now the brain is a wonderful gadget for this sort of thing. For most people it will see both the front sight and the target sharply. This doesn't work for a few, such as my dad. If you add +1.25 diopters to the distance part, don't forget to take 1.25 diopters away from the add or reading part on that side.

Another tirck is to buy the little paste on adds intended for reading with sunglasses. You can stick a +1.25 in the center on the shooting side right in line with the sights. This will make the front sight nice and sharp while you have distance vision for everything around it.

I have other tricks up my sleeve if any one is interested.

140orbetter- Good shooting, you must be on cloud 9, I know I wouldbe. I have resisted using a scope, but as the bi-focales keep getting stronger, it maybe only a matter of time. Its hard to give up what you once had.

I guess I never scoped before my eyes got old because in all honesty it just doesn't look cool to me. I mean, nice simple SA in a nice short barrel and plop a scope on topt that is as long as the gun.
BUT I use this revolver for deer hunting mostly. And my hunting here is 80% stand hunting 20% still hunting. In the stand I got plenty of time to get the deer "in the scope" an with still hunting most times I can easily lean against a tree to "find it".
Cripes if I had to live off the venison I killed with snap shooting at running deer over the years with ANY weapon I'd be pretty lean
