WHOS SHOOTING AND WHOS NOT

I got to take the BC out today. I was trying some new loads. A Barnes 400 gr. XFB over 55.0 gr. of Varget at an estimated 1900 FPS. It was able to shoot consistant 3/4" groups at 50 yds. I also tried some 420 gr. Cast Performance bullets, over 37.0 gr. of IMR 4198 at estimated 1700 FPS. These held to 1" at 50 yds. Should make for some great deer hunting.

Wow Blue, that's fast for a 420 grain cast bullet.  Did it lead your bore at all?  I'll bet it kicked the bejeebers out of you didn't it?

The fastest I've gotten too is 1375 fps with a 405 grain cast bullet.

I finnaly got a chance to take the new Weatherby out and try it out...man...iI think I'll keep it for a while...after bore siting it my first 3 shots at 100 yards were all touching...then it opened up to around 1" for the first 5 shots.....things starting getting interesting after that... the point of impact shifted almost 2" horizontily to the right..but remained dead on verticle hieght...this was with the factory 100grain load...I think there might be a bedding problem with it as it heats up...or maybe not...since this is the first Weatherby Magnum I've owned...temp was around 80 F and no wind...I don't know...maybe I'll get some reloaded tonite and try those to see if it does the same thing...

Nope, never tried the adapters. I distrust that long jump and it's too easy for me to make up reduced loads for the chambers I have.

After I bought these bullets, I had trouble finding loading info for them. I e-mailed Cast Performance, and they e-mailed back, but the info didn't come through. I went to J.B. Youngs website, and took the load info from an article he had posted regarding his 420 gr. crater light bullets. I had to go out and buy some IMR 4198 to match his load info, but it had great results. Like I said, the velocity is estimated, based on his results with a 24" barrel, and adding 20 FPS per inch, for the additional 3" barrel length I have. And, yes it did kick! The next load I have to test is using the Barnes 300 gr. X bullet.

See, not everything I read in gun mags is BS, just most things. :)  Someday that info might help me, maybe.

I haven't had the opportunity to shoot my handi 223, or the new 44 mag. handgun I picked up recently.  I've been in Michigan(I know...I kinda felt like a traitor sitting in the NCO club at Camp Grayling with a huge picture of the Michigan Wolverines on the wall)....but overall, the trip was good.  Alot of stories to tell.  I was doing alot of shooting from the time I was out of school, to the time I left about 3 weeks ago.  Was doing pretty good on groundhogs too...I'm gonna check some fields tommorrow.  I did get to do some shooting up there....a little bit bigger guns than anyone here uses though.  I got 101 out of 200 hits with the M3P .50 cal machine gun at aerial targets....pretty good shooting...best in my battery.  Let me tell you boys, if you havent sat in an avenger, and lit off 200 rounds of 50 bmg rounds, ya just havent lived.....it was great!!!  So yeah, I guess you could say that I've done a little shooting.

Please don't ask me why!
