Remington Rimfire ammo is bad stuff.............
« on: July 13, 2004, 03:43:16 AM »
At the range recently we conducted some ammo test to determine which was best in our guns. While shooting 5 shot groups we saw that the Remington Target ammo would sometimes KEYHOLE. Not a good thing. And Thunderbolt ammo would sometimes misfire. That's not good either. Contacted Remington and their response wasn't confidence building at all. They'll keep going as they have as   long as people keep buying their ammo.

Of what we tested Aguila SE & Eley Pistol (blue) shot the best. Winchester T22 was pretty good also. Remington was the worst. We didn't test Federal or CCI because we didn't have any.

I haven't had any keyhole problems with Remington Target, but I can't seem to get through one relay without a FTF. Even tried putting the FTF rounds back in chamber afterwards and try again, still FTF. I'm defintely looking for something more reliable.

That just shows how weird guns can be. I got a custom built Ruger Mark II & it prefers Remington Target over all others. I bought all I could get of that lot # when I discovered this too.

Simular experience Jose, but with Thunderbolt!  In other guns the Thunderbolt doesn't do very well.  Each gun does have its ammo preferances and to write off an entire brand based on what a few folks experience is bad advice in my opinion.

MFGS do have bad runs now and then also.  To slam an entire line based on a small sample is not called for.  Some bitch when american mfgs leave the country and take jobs with them, some bitch when they stay!

Best advice is to test many brands and see what works best in your gun then go buy as much of that lot as you can find!  It just might come in a green box

bgjohn, I'm confidant that you are relating your experience as it happened. All I & others are saying is... with the next .22 you shoot that may not be the case. There are different reasons for misfires & keyholes. Even just a dirty chamber can cause misfires. I'm just trying to inform here, not reform. Carry on.

Hi bgjohn  :D

If you shoot long enough you will have misfires with every brand, it happens.  I have not had a keyhole with .22s that I remember but that sure is possible too.  I may be reading something into the post that isn't meant but it seems as though you have a hard on for the green box.  I have had very good luck with Thunderbolts in some things and not so great in others.  Yes I will keep some green boxes on my shelves along with some plastic ones and some white ones etc.  Gotta find what works best and sometime that comes in a green box.

Rem Target .22 ammo
« Reply #10 on: September 07, 2004, 12:01:29 PM »
For the most part, my experience has been that the Remington ammo is not a stellar performer in most rifles.   When I got my Winchester 52D from CMP last year (the one that looks like it got dragged behind a Deuce-And-A-Half), I slapped a set of sights on it and fired groups like this at 50 yards prone with some 20-year old Remington Target:

This won't set any international records, but it's not bad for a beat-up rifle with 20-year-old ammo.  Now if I could just find some more of that lot number...

Resp'y,
Bob S.

22 ammo
« Reply #11 on: September 22, 2004, 11:16:59 AM »
 in the 60's remington was my favorite .22 ammo, now that i'm getting back into target shooting i find that it general sucks. a fellow at my local range suggested i try wolf match extra. i did and walla, one hole groups @ 25, .38 @ 50 and .8 @ 100 on a calm day.
others i like are pmc zappers and winchester hv copper. all of these  shoot well in both my 10/22 and cz 452 varmint.

good luck!
if its worth doing, finish it!
