Help with scope mounting
« on: January 14, 2003, 08:01:26 AM »
Gentlemen,

I recently mounted a Leupold Vari-X II with 50mm Obj on a brand new Weatherby Vanguard. When I went to bore sight it I had to adjust the elevation dial all the way down and I am still almost an inch high at 25 feet. I think I might need to shim under the rear mount. Can anyone help me?

There would appear to be two (2) possible causes for the problem you have experienced.

!.  The mounts you have are not correct for the rifle.   This has happened to me with several with new-in-the box bases.

2. The scope has suffered some abuse which results in the internal elements becoming misaligned.

Keep us readers posted...................

God Bless and good shooting!

Try shooting it the way it is. At 25 feet .....

At 25 feet....it should be almost 2 inches high.  Remember, your line of sight from the scope is lower at 100-200 yds than what you will see through the bore.  IT SHOULD BE HIGH AT 25 FEET, in fact you will probably have to back it off in the other direction.  Remember...bore sighting, everything is backwards  from shooting. Right is left, up is down etc.  If you are adjusting the scope when you are shooting it, if it is hitting left, you adjust the scope to the right.  But if you are looking through the bore and you want it to go right, you adjust the scope left.  It's easy to get mixed up bore sighting.
Take a peice of plywood and some printer paper to the range. Draw a circle the size of a quarter, and take 1 shot at 25 feet to see where it is hitting.  If you are within a few inches on the paper, then move it out to 25 yds. Now Zero the scope and set it ONE INCH HIGH.  Check it at 100 yds and it should be pretty close.
....make it count

I missed that 25 feet, my feeble old eyes thought it said 25 yards.  Robert is correct at 25 feet the line of sight is well above the center of the bore.  Move that target out and try it, suspect things will be fine.  I always bore sight before even heading to the range.  Saves a bunch of ammo........

God Bless and good shooting!

I took my rifle to a gunsmith and he verified that I did a nice job mounting the scope, but that I forgot to consider the fact that i was trying to bore sight @ 25 feet instead of 25 yards. Thaanks for the help though, now I know where to go for advice before I see the gunsmith.
