Sighting in 25-06 - Best distance?
« on: July 14, 2004, 01:56:45 AM »
I'm gonna go to the range this weekend and see how some of the loads I've worked up do in my Ultra 25-06. I know this gun tends to be a little temporamental and takes a lot of rounds to brake in. So I'm just gonna shoot it as much as I can before season opens, despite the 98 to 100 degree temps we're having here now. Early morning should be good for shooting a while.
I plan on zeroing my scope at 100 yds. Is this good for a 117 gr. spitzer round from this gun? What will that give me at 200 yds. or 50 yds. and below? Just wondering if anyone has worked this out yet and could save me a litle time and ammo.

Hi,
Just consulted a Gun's and Ammo annual.   1.9" high at 100yards = dead on at 200 and 3" down at 250 yards.
      Regards Jon. :D

i sight in most of my rifles at 25 yards.  I usually try to get my .308 about 1 inch high at this range, and then its usually dead on at 200 with some loads.  Saves on walking...     I learned this with my brief military exposure.  Once i get groups where i want them, then i'll expand outward...

You can go check out Remington's site -  http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/ballistics.htm  and check a similar bullet weight and velocity, just to get an idea.  Using the drop down menu select 25-06 for centerfire (or any other rimfire, centerfire, or shotshell you're interested in) and it'll list Remingtons offerings.  It's a good starting point.

I also like it because you can compare different loads of different calibers.  Like how my .270's trajectory with Rem express 100 grain psp's compare to a 22-250 55 grain express psp.  The long range trajectory shows these two loads with less that an inch difference from 0 to 500 yards.  After seeing this, and seeing how my weatherby likes the 100 grain psp's my need for a flat shooting 22-250 dropped alot.  A few boxes of ammo are much cheaper than a new shooting rig, scope, ammo, etc that I'd use maybe once a year or once every few years...
