Knight disc ?
« on: July 14, 2004, 04:36:01 PM »
hey guys haven't posted in a while have been busy with summer. Question ? I have an opportunity to purchase a knight disc rifle stainless and black synthetic stock 50 cal. and uses original orange discs. I can buy the gun for 275.00 brand new in the box. I currently have an encore and a bunch of other sidelocks from t/c. Is the disc rifle worth buying or am I better sticking with my encore. Any comments about the disc rifle welcome.   Thanx John

I had 2 knight muzzleloaders both .50 cal. The guns were very accurate. I then bought 2 Encores, a .50 and a 45 cal for my son and I. I have always shot Contender & Encore pistols so I wanted the Encore muzzleloader. I am very happy with the Encore. I sold both of my Knight muzzleloaders. But a Stainless Disc is hard to pass up for $275.00. NIB. I know this don't help, but I think I would pass on the Knight.

jrkrk I have a couple of disk rifles. I also had a encore that I got the first year they came out.

I did not have good luck with the encore and sold it before I did something stupid like wrap it around a tree out of frustration.  The guy I sold it too sent it back to the factory once replaced a couple of factory parts and now it shoots good for him and is easy to clean.

Both the disk rifles I have shot good for me from the first range session.

The disk magnum I have with 26 inch barrel and thumbhole shoots pretty good with three pyro pellets and a 250 gr xtp in a knight high pressure sabot.  However, it will sling a flyer every now and then with the 150 pellet charge.  With 100 grains of 777 ffg and the 250xtp it will print snuff can groups consistantly as long as I do my part at 100 yds. However, I have had some good days at the range and cloverleafed some groups under an inch.  I havent had any flyer problems yet. Dead on at 100 yds it hits about 3 inches low at 150 with the same dead on hold.

The standard disk rifle I have also shoots good with 100gr of 777 ffg and the 250 xtp. Again around snuff can groups consistantly at 100 yds and sometimes better.

I could never justify the conversion to the new type disks(the red ones) that was offered by knight because the orange disks have served me so well.

The encore is much easier to clean.  It feels good to me too. I might even buy it back if the opportunity ever arises.  However, I really like the feel of the disk rifles too.  The disk rifles are a little more time consuming to clean if you do it right.

I feel 275 is a good price for a new stainless disk in the box.  I wouldnt sell either of my used disk rifles for 275 and they are both black on black.

I am a big fan of the original orange disc Knight rifle. I sold a Master Hunter extreme to switch to a entry level DISC magnum blued 26". I prefer the original orange disc because the bolt seals better when it locks down on the tab of the disc when closed. The extreme disc bolt when closed leaves a larger vent hole that lets more gas blow by. I did update my bolt to the new wrench-less secondary safety. Now the rifle is near perfection. Install a set of Warne mounts and quick disconnect lever rings it is one sweet rifle.

I have tested just about every sabot and bullet out there. Yes the candy colored tipped are fancy and accurate with a fouled bore. But I usually don't dirty a rifle up for opening day. But you need a consistant followup shot. The best clean bore to fouled second combination I have found is also the cheapest. Bulk Hornady Sabots combined with bulk Hornady 300 grain XTP bullets.

The price for the Knight is about what there selling for here. Both are excellent rifles, however the knight would probably edge out the Encore in accuarcy however the diffrence would probably be minor. The major difference is the Knight has a fully adjustable trigger where the Encore does not. But the sights are better on the Encore, however if your scoping it, than that will not matter. I say if your happy with the Encore I wouldn't change. However I have one gun setup to shoot 100gr. and a heavier bullet and one for 150gr. and a lighter bullet for hunting open fields. It's nice to be able to change guns for different stands.
