Getting a 270 barrel (changed my order to 30-06 stainless)
« on: July 15, 2004, 04:02:40 AM »
Well guys I've really thinned the gun cabinet down in the last couple days. Even sold my 2wd 4wheeler (still have my 4wd) and paid off several bills. So I thought I was entitled to a new barrel. Decided to get a stainless 270 barrel to put on my ultra reciever with the cin. laminated stock. Plan on installing gloss rings and a brushed aluminum scope. I'm thinking it will look good. Kinda like a duo-tone pistol. What do you guys think. I used to hunt with a 270 several years ago and really liked it, shot a lot of deer with it, so I figured I would get another. The barrel will be 134.00 after the fitting and shipping  Can not waite to get it. :-D

Well I was gonna ask what you were going to do with that barrel-less Ultra and now I know. That should be a beautiful setup when you're done with it. Never even thought about that type combo for mine. Maybe you could somehow post some some pics when it's finished.  I don't think anyone else has that type setup. Oh yea, what do I think.....$134 because of all the new fees.......

BBF, I've slept since we last talked, so please refresh my memory Sir. Did you ever start 'rollin' yer own'? If you did,  you might take a look at the .280. Bunch more bullet choices for the handloader, but for the non-handloader the .270 beats the .280 for choices.  Don't remember if the .280 barrel is offered in stainless. Just my 2 sents. BTW, how you been, and what have you been up to?

Hey, 308 I been rollin my own for a while now. Got a pretty good load for the max. I'm down to one max though. Sold the H&R barrel but still have my Rossi. Were you been hangin out or have you been puttin in OT at work. I'm going with the 270 because I can get it in stainless. I sure would go with the 280 if I could get it in 24'' stainless. Lik2hunt I have been thinking about this set for 4 or 5 months now. It will be different alright. Don't have a way to post pics, unless my brother-n-law can do it for me. I'll let you know when I get it done and maybe I can get him to post the pics for me.

There is only one problem with that and I foregot to mention it. I do not have a digital camera. :( My Dad has one. I maybe able to have him take them and then let my brother-n-law down load them here. It will be a couple months though. Will see what happens.

Yup, kinda helps if you have a digcam!    You can get some pretty good cameras in the $100-$150 range that are easy to use and produce great pics. I have a Fujifilm FinePix A205 that I paid $100 for, takes great pics and is small and light enough to haul around with me hunting and fishing for those shots on the river or at the kill site. The link below is a great place for looking at a lot of camera choices in what ever price range you choose.    hth,  Tim

BBF -
You can have your pics hosted right here at GBO too. Find out more by following the "System Wide Messages" advice above. No "Hosted by Hunt 101" that way. I'll be looking forward to those pics. I assumed that you didn't have a digicam since you hadn't posted any pics of the barrels and receivers. Just thought I'd plant a seed   .

Yeah, that's the short harris (9-13") for bench and prone stuff. I have 2 more that I can use sitting(12-25"). It works well if you don't mind getting into the prone position which for me ain't the easiest cuz I'm old and a little fat! I made a rear cross stick to use with the short ones, out of a coupe pieces of nylon ramrod, they're tied together just like regular high shootin sticks cept their short to support the butt when shooting prone, you just squeeze em to adjust elevation just like you would a rear bag. They're pointed so they stick in the ground enough to hold in place for extremely steady shots.   tim

Reciever went out today UPS. :-D  Now I just have to waite several weeks :( Give them instructions to put a black scope base on it. I never actually seen a stainless H&R rifle and did not know if they come with a silver base or not. I'm going to order a silver Tasco world class 3-9x40 and get a set of high Leupold rings from WalMart.

Here's something you might...or anyone...... without.......a digital camera can do to get your pictures on-line......go ahead and take your pictures with a regular camera...then take them to be developed at Walmart or anywhere they will put your pictures on a CD...then you can post them as you've been told how to...no need to pass up an oppourtunity to post pictures

That is agood idea Mac. I use a 35mm that takes good pics but when I attempt to scan them into my computer and then post them they never come out too good. Gonna try this with the next batch.

Well I called H&R today and they do not have any stainless barrels. So I'll be waiting a while. But it will be worth it.

Well, I called today and changed my order to a 30-06 stainless. I decided to change it because I have a 7600 pump 270 win and I just made another good gun trade and ended up with another 7600 in a 270 win. So I now have two 7600 pumps in 270 win. Figured I did not need 3 270 win rifles. So know I'm waiting till I get the 30-06 stainless. Good thing is when they get them the 22-250 may finally be available and I'll add it to the list. :)
