Why Not Super Redhawk?
« on: July 15, 2004, 05:13:13 PM »
i have been lurkin a little and i have noticed that quite a few of you seem to dislike the super redhawk and prefer any other ruger and i was curious why. i just recently purchased a super in 44 mag and i love it. if it is just a matter of personal feel i could understand that. i shot the bisley, redhawk and super hawk, and liked the super best(hate the stainless though). i am shooting 2" groups at 50 yds with the iron sights. thanks

I have the Super Redhawk 454 Casull and the Redhawk in 44MAG. Both are great guns and both shoot extremely well.

I have one , as does my son, in .480 Ruger. Now there's a nice revolver that makes a big hole!

Bought a used Super Redhawk in 44mag because of it's reputation. Shot a bunch of different factory rounds and could not group well at 25 yards. Sent to factory, it came back with a trigger and front sight adjustment but still would not shoot well. Bullets way to the left and all over the place. Took it to a reliable gun shop here in Georgia, two gunsmiths looked at it and said the barrel was off to the left a few degrees. Sent it back to the repair shop with a full explanation ... they worked on the crane and may have replaced the barrel (not sure). Hope to take it to the range soon and will try to find someone else to shoot it. I ain't givin up cause i like the gun, it's gotta be the strongest one out there. Also the Ruger rep told me not to rest the butt of the gun directly on the bench which I had been doing some of the time.

Next time I likely won't buy a used one!! Live and learn!!

Handled the Redhawks but still prefer the SAs.  Personally, I see very few people actually using the double action mode while hunting so I think that most simply buy the SAs.  Another reason may be the weight of the big SRH.  Don't get me wrong, they're not bad looking or weak guns, but they are kinda heavy.  To me, the SAs also have a bit of a classic look to them also.

Got one and like it.  My only complaint is that it is kind of a goofy looking gun, but I have gotten used to it.  I have also owned a Bisley and a Redhawk but like the Super the best.

Too awkward and hard to carry even compared to the std Redhawk.  It won't even fit in a shoulder holster.

i dont like the looks of the super.  redhawks are a little better, but i prefer the full underlug.   they are strong, but i have yet to see one with a acceptable trigger.   and they are heavy.    all in all for those who dont mind these things, you cant beat them for value.   it is just that i do mind these things.

I just traded for a 7.5" Redhawk scope model in 44 cal. I selected this over the super because
Have a Redhawk 5.5" and like it
Ruger grips are to small for me, replace with Pachmeyer
To me its a better looking gun
Do not believe the super is any stronger, in fact the weight is a tad
 lighter
To go from scope to unscoped shooting, must be careful of the different
sized factory rings, where the Redhawk rings are the same front and rear.

I could buy a Super if it wasn't for the ugliness. I have a 5 1/2" Redhawk .45 Colt and numerous SA's but not a Super Redhawk. They are just too ugly and as the saying goes......."Life is just too short to live with an ugly gun".  :D

Yes, it's an ugly revolver, but I'll live with that. My BlackHawk, SBH, and Security -Six are a whole lot prettier, but they don't have that big hole..... or a scope. And it is true, it's fired 99% of the time in single action mode.

Sometimes you just need an ugly big gun!

My SRH is a great shooter, it (they) did need a Wolff spring trigger change out and this does wonders.  They will never have a trigger like a S/W but they will not be shot loose with heavy hunting rounds.

All my revolvers are S/W, with the exception of one SRH in 44 mag.

I would much reather have a .454 in a SBH, but Ruger doesn`t make them. I am a Ruger fan. 3 of their center fire handgun and 3 more rimfires. One of them is a SRH in .454. I also have a Taurus RB in .454. As far as these 2 compair the Taurus has a far better trigger, is quite abit more accurate, and has a fraction of the recoil. The Ruger does weight alot less and is far easier to carry. My RB is one of the first on the market and is a great gun, but from what I`ve been hearing lately about their quality control and Taurus`s cuotomer service I doubt that I will but and other Taurus untill they get their act straight. As for the .480 I see no real use for it. It is a giant step side ways from the .454. My next big bore revolver will be eather a .500 SW, or the 329 PD SW, another .44 mag. After I get my .500 SW I will have a SRH in .454 for sale. My single action Rugers, on the other hand, are not now and probibly never will be for sale.

If you like single action Rugers, you may want to consider a BFR in 500MAG. Just like a big Ruger on steroids. :)  I had the S&W500 and sold it after comparing the BFR in 500MAG and shooting both. The BFR just felt better to me.

I love my 480.  It isn't the lightest.  That is my gripe, but is it STRONG.  My Bisley recoil and smashes my middle finger knuckles.  That why they make a bunch of guns, for us to try.

Count me as one who loves a .44 mag SRH. I also have made some mods, Pachmyer grips, Wolf spring kit, 2X Simmons scope. Also have a shoulder holster that makes it much easier to tug around. I reload with 240 gr XTP, 17.1 gr of 2400, shoots good groups without beating you up. Shoots great at the range, hope to try it on a deer this fall. Good luck.

I don't hate the SRH I just prefer the feel and balance of the regular Redhawk. Bottom line shoot what feels comfortable and you will be more accurate.

I could never appreciate a SRH as they are so ugly I'd have to squint my eyes every time I picked it up and I'd never see it clearly. Give me a Redhawk anytime. :-D    :-D  :-D

I love my SRH. I second the Wolff Spring set. Trigger was dealt with immediately with that modification. Rifle sights are on and a 2 X 6 scope sits in rings but I use the SRH mostly for wet weather and rifle backup. It has stopped several wounded deer that went past my stand. One shot. I have a 320 gr bullet I hand swaged that only expands a little. It is so heavy that it goes through shoulders quite well. Go through one or both shoulders and you usually anchor a whitetail, on the spot. I had a Redhawk and liked it. I had a 629 that was the worst S&W ever made. Lots of gaps between certain parts. The SRH is still the best .44 Mag I have ever owned.

When I pick up my SRH 454 Casull which I can load up with 45 Colt loads from 200gr cast bullets @ 700fps up to 330gr hard casts @ 1400fps and still be able to fire the 454 Casull 300gr jacketed bullets @ 1700fps and 360gr @ 1550fps "I'm in heaven". Also I get great accuracy from all of these loads whether I am using a scope or iron sights. Most versatile handgun I own.........

I wish you guys would stop talking about your SRH's. I have already decided in my mind that I am NOT, I repeat NOT, going to like them as well as my Redhawk. You cannot change my mind. They are as ugly as a bull dog and I ain't gonna have no ugly guns in my house.

So there!!!!!

By the way, how is the recoil in a SRH with full house loads? And don't think because I've asked a question that I'm warming up. I have my mind made up!!

I'll keep this ugly SRH in my house along with my ugly REDHAWK.  Face it, Rugers are built like tanks but S&W's are as sweet as pie!!!
