308 rechamber to 309jdj?
« on: July 16, 2004, 06:45:32 AM »
I tried calling SSK, but couldn't get through.  Can a 308 be rechambered to a 309jdj?  By comparing the 444marlin (309jdj parent case) and the 308, it looks like the conversion will work, but I have heard he recommends the rechamber from a 30/30.  Any ideas?
Thanks!

.308 to .309

Why???-- -- would you want to do that???  The .309 JDJ was built to get the most out of the Contender frame without blowing it up. The Encore frame will take the .308 pressure. Ballistically they are essentially the same. If you want more .30 caliber performance out of the Encore get a .300 Win Mag barrel. pg

Another option is the .30-06 Ackley Improved. I know a fellow shooting one of these and he just loves it. You can still shoot factory .30-06 ammo for fireform brass (or in a pinch if needed). This fellow used to have a .300 Win Mag Encore Barrel, but for some reason decided to sell it in favor of building a .30-06 AI (had a factory .308 barrel rechambered). He tells me the .30-06 AI will achieve almost the same performance level as the .300 Win Mag, but with less recoil.

So yes the .309 JDJ is a possibility as it is basically a shortened, rimmed .30-06 AI.

The reason for this is that I prefer to use a rimmed catridge when dealing with an encore.  Is the 309jdj that similar to a 308, I was not aware of that, thanks.  I could just go with a 307 or 307ai, but I was under the impression the 309jdj was ballistically superior.  Thanks for the replies!

Personally, I would prefer the 307 Win AI over the JDJ, but it is simply my preference.

The .309 JDJ was designed to give .308 Win. performance from a Contender. It has a larger case capacity so it can obtain similar performance at lower pressure.

At the same pressures in an Encore the .309 JDJ will easily out perform the .308 Win. but the problem is no data for such pressure levels exists. The .307 Win. would merely require a cut be made for the rim BUT it does NOT equal the .308 performance level. Case is thicker and has a lessor capacity than the .308 Win. and you cannot use .308 Win. data for it.
