Hello everyone.

I was wondering can I shoot 45acp + p in my springfield mil spec? If so what advantages does it offer over regular 45acp and are there any disadvantages to shooting it? I appreciate all the help that I am sure yall will give me.

+P ammo should be safe in your Springfield. The 45 ACP was designed around a 230 gr bullet with a MV of 850 fps and a chamber pressure of 19,500 psi or less. High performance loads in 185 and 200 grain bullets take the MV up to 1000 fps. These loads increase the chamber pressure to 21,000 psi. Not a real great increase.

The +P loads do have more ft lbs of energy. When used with a hollow point bullet, they will expand more.

The negative's are increased stress on the gun, heavier recoil, loss of accuracy (sometimes). The POI may be different from a standard load, no biggie if you have adjustable sights.

I appreciate the help. I may be purchasing some of this. I don't know I just saw someone on here talking about it and was curious if I could use it. Anyways thanks for the help.

I wouldn't do it-I believe that Springfields Mil spec has a 2 piece barrel and I wouldn't take the chance

2-piece barrel? I don't think so. The only 2-piece barrel in a 1911 type gun that I know of is a 22 LR in a Colt Ace Govt Mod. The Mil spec has basically the same barrel as the original GI gun except it's throated for better feeding.

The 2-piece barrel is no big deal. Some of the Mil Specs have it, some don't. I've used +P in my Springfield and I use 450 SMC in it also. The 450 SMC fires a 165 gr bullet at 1450 fps for 770 ft/lbs of energy from a 5" barrel. All that is required to use the 450 SMC is a higher rated recoil spring (I use a 24 # spring), but I also use a CP buffer for added protection. BTW, I've also got a 2 piece barrel in my Springer. If you're that worried about a 2-piece barrel, a new barrel is cheap enough and not that hard to install. MI VHNTR

jimbo444: Yes, you can shoot +P ammo in your Springfield Mil-spec 45 but why bother. I feel there is little advantage, either on paper or in real life situations, that the +P 'might' offer over standard ball or a cast reload with a nice fat nose at mil-spec velocities. Unless you are going out hunting something critter-wise, and the 45 isn't the gun of choice for that endeavour, the 45 auto will give you everything you need with standard mil-spec ball.

When you go to hot +P loads, you have recoil and increased return to target time. The mil-spec or the same flavor reloads are pretty easy to shoot and give you all you need. As for increased wear and tear on the gun - yep, you will get some but not enough to worry about. You can shoot Mil-spec through your Springer for a looooooong time before youhave to worry about replacing anything, like a recoil spring about every 5K rounds or so. BTW, a heavy duty set of recoil springs for that Springer, say a 22 lb set from Wolff Springs in PA, might ease some recoil, too. HTH. Mikey...
