Have you been practicing with your bow???
« on: July 16, 2004, 02:53:16 PM »
Have you been practicing shooting your bow. I have been out every night weather permitting and shooting for at least and hour at different ranges. I will miss the first 10 days of deer bow season. I will be in Alaska hunting Caribou. But when I get back, I will be living in the woods. :)

I never really stopped. I even set up targets in the snow over the winter. You hunt in the snow, right? so why not practice in it.
I probably sling about 50+ arrows 5-6 days a week. I've been working on longer distances, out to 40-50 yds, and have a new setup to tune in so I've been shooting a lot lately.
Plus, it's just fun! :-D I've got 5 targets in my back yard a various distances so it doesn't get boring.

Well yes since my Mattews is only 2 weeks or so old I 've been shooting it almost everyday.
Thats normal for me this time of year though. Sept will be here before you know it.
The big thing for me is the time I should have now. I used to work for a buissness that was very winter specific. It got cold and we were busy.
I took my vacation time every fall and winter so I could hunt. I started my own buissness last fall so this year I should really be able to spend some time in the woods.

I bought a used Q2 from a friend and have been shooting almost every other day since May. I usually shoot 18 or 24 times a session. I stop when my shoulder starts aching. Let my muscles rest a day then practice some more.
I'm getting ready to set up the tree stand and really get it dialed in. I'm amazed at how accurate I'm now shooting. I tried 50 yards this evening for giggles and the bow difinetly has potential. I don't know if I would ever shoot at an animal that far. I really haven't built up my confidence on animals past 30 yards though my 40 yard groups are tight! I haven't shot a lot with my broadheads, but they seem to group well so far and are close to the impact of my field tips.
I'm addicted,
Stan

I practice more than I should.

I shoot 2-3 times a day, at least every other day.  I have a Block target with no marks on it.  I shoot from 20-50 yards but practice more at 30-40.  My goal is to hit a mental mark, on the Block.  No spots on caribou or moose!

Back in NY I had Delta deer target and a backstop on wheels.  I would shoot from a 16' treestand out to 50 and had marked on the lawn in paint archs every 10 yards from the tree stand.  Once the season got closer I would hang the tree stands up and us the actual stands. I think I moved to Alaska right after Cabela's started using my back yard as a photo shoot for catalogs. :jeep:

I have one of those blocks with no marks on it also. I was going to get the smaller ones, then they pulled out the Big Block and I just had to have it. It stands about 4 feet tall. I also have a Glen deal buck and 2 dead stop targets. I have range marks at 10 ,20, 30, 40 and 50 yards. I do 90% of my practice from 20 to 40 yards. With a bow I hunt from the ground. I have only a few times hunted from a stand. I practice shooting from both but, I prefer ground hunting for deer.  8)

Redhawk,
I'll string up my bow in a couple of weeks, around the first of August.  From then on I will shoot until the end of the Ohio season in January.  Unstring it in January (or when I fill my tag :-) ) and put it away until next August.

I've had this bow for a couple of years now and really like it.  Its a Hoyt Cybertec and it draws and shoots quite smoothly.  The hard part is shooting it those first 6 to 8 weeks and getting the strength and muscle memory back.

Good luck on your caribou hunt.
