Hungarian M44 shoots Hungarian Yellow Tips
« on: July 17, 2004, 12:23:13 PM »
Today (Saturday) I went to the range because I was coureous about the
mods I made to the sights. Since "Lyly" was shooting to the right with 180 grn yellow tips I tapped the front sight to the right and more to the base's center
line (the sight was about 1/8" to the left of center). The first shot
after two "fouling shots" (something I learned from shooting
Blackpowder) clipped the 9/10 ring @ 100 yrds and the two following
grouped into 1 1/ 2". Subsequent shots opened the group to 3" with
verticle stringing. A guy with his son were sighting in their
deer/elk guns, father a .300 Win Mag, the son (about 12 years old)
a .270 Win. both with expensive glass on them. The RO likes to move
the "louder guns" to the end of the range away from his station. The
father and son and I were shooting our groups and I heard Jr. say "
dad it is just crazy that he is using iron sights at 100 yards and
getting groups like that." Evidentualy I was getting better groups
with my "old" M44 than dad's .300 WM.

Good shooting I just love it when others notice what these old war horses can do when i good shooter gets a hold of them.  These guys at the range just go crazy when they see what we are shooting.  I've learned that most of these guns can do it if we do our part and why not they have fought in wars so they must have had some kind of accuracy right?  These guys didn't just make 100 yd shots with them either.  And nice move on the front site too it has to go the direct its off.     BigBill

You guys are making me want to go to the range and soon i hope go.

At my age, I take any thrill when I can get it.  One of the best is taking an iron sighted rifle to the range next to a scoped, high power rifle.  Usually it's my Trapper in 45 Colt but last week I took my Mosin Nagant, M 1891/30 and printed a three inch. 15 shot group with surplus ammo at 100 yards.  I casually retrieved my target and then two people asked what kind of rifle  I was shooting.  Good on ya'.  Keep it up and keep those folks that think only a scoped rifle in a magnum or short magnum cartridge is the only thing that will shoot guessing and wondering where they went wrong.

Well I did tell them that "Lyly" was a 1953 M44 Mosin Nagant (seven years older than yours truly) and I was shooting 1952 (correct period) ammo through it. They were incredulous...... One of the regulars at the range, an older gentleman (saw action in Korea) looked at Lyly asked permision (I granted) to handle it and worked the action, looked through the sights and commented about the great sight picture. He would have dolted on my gun all day until I tactfully said that their was more ammo to burn....
