Need help with Bushnell Elites
« on: July 18, 2004, 02:01:10 AM »
I've been doing alot of research on alot of scopes, and I think I have settled on Bushnell Elite series. Only problem is, now I can't make up my mind which one. I'll be mounting it on a .300 WM (long action), and will be shooting 100-400 yards (hunting), or more (target). I've read Greybeards' review on the Elite 3200 in 5-15x50.
My question is there any significant difference between the 3200 mentioned and the 4200 4-16x40 and the 4200 4-16x50...other than price. I've been to Bushnells website and compaired the specs, and they are all close with the 4-16x50 being the widest FOV( by 5 ft on highest X), largest exit pupil (by 2.5 on low X and only .2 on high X). The 3200 5-15x50 is heavier though (by 2oz). The 4200 4-16X40 is also close.

Sorry so long...Any assistance in spending my money is appreciated.

I own MANY Elite scopes, in the 4200 and 3200 series.  The 4200 is noticeably better and worth the extra money.

Of the Elite 4200s, I own several of the following: 2.5x-10x-40mm, 4x-16x-40mmAO, and 4x-16x-50mmAO.

On a long range rifle like a .300WM (which I also own a few) I would go with the 4x-16x.  Now, if you don't mind the extra weight, then I would get the 50mm version.  I have a 4x-16x-40mm mounted on a .25-06, and a 4x-16x-50mm mounted on a 7mm ULTRA mag.

As my Savage 111 weighs less than 7 pounds, I'm not awfully worried about 4 or 5 ounces. It's going to be a real kicker so "some" extra weight might even be an advantage, maybe? Not much eye relief to play with, but thats ok. Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure how much my Remington BDL SS weighs, but the 7mm Ultra Mag is just a COBRA of a kicker - it strikes back so fast that you can hardly see it. (I'm obviously exaggerating, but you know what I mean.)  The Elite 4200 4x-16x-50mm has, if I remember correctly, 3.6" of eye relief.  Despite all that sharp recoil, the eye relief is fine - the scope has never touched me.

So I think that if that scope works well with the 7Ultra, then it should similarly be fine with the .300 Winny.  Keep in mind that the difference in eye relief between the 50mm and 40mm is only .1" - so that's really nothing.  So get either one and you'll be fine.
