Anyone have a 6.5 x 55 encore?
« on: July 19, 2004, 11:41:11 AM »
I bought a Mod 96 Swede that shot so well with little recoil I started looking for a sporter in that caliber.   I ran across an Encore barrel for sale but I don't know if it has the same twist in the barrel.  My Encore 7mm08 heavy barrel shoots little groups but would like to hear from someone who has shot the 24" tapered barrel in 6.5 X 55.
Thanks in advance

I had a 24 in. factory Encore barrel in 6.5 Swede and sold it in a fit of ignorance. Since then I picked one up from a fellow forum member and it shoots as good as my first one, this one's not getting away. Groups run from 1 inch to just under 2 inches. It's one of my favorites.

Thanks for the reply Steve.  1 inch groups would be acceptible. I will be reloading so it will keep me busy trying to get one holers. I got my best accuracy in the 29" Swede barrel shooting 4895 powder and 150 gr. Hornady bullets.   Less than 1" at 50 yds with iron sights and fifty year old eyes.  I am hoping to do better with a scoped Encore. I guess I'll try to go buy the barrel tonight.   :D James

james,

The 6.5x55 Swede is one of my favorite cartridges.  My rifle is a Winchester M70 Featherweight w/22" barrel. The throating in my rifle is long and was made for the 156-160g bullets. However, the rifle shoots Hornady 129 and 140g bullets very well. My current load is the Hornady 129g over H380 powder for a velocity of just over 2,900 fps. This load has grouped as small as .3"@100 yds.
