.17 HM2 vs .22 pressures
« on: July 20, 2004, 08:30:20 PM »
I've got a couple vintage .22 Remington rolling blocks in the gun cabinet with eroded bores.  I've a #2 that's looks great but is actually two combined rifles, so no collector value.
Been wondering if I could have the barrel relined to the new .17 HM2.
Anyone know what the breech pressure is for this new round?
If a .17 reline would work, I've a Lyman Super Spot 20X that I'd love to add to the rifle.
What do ya think?

I have seen the new generation Favorites in 22 Mag but de Haas in his book 'Single Shot Rifles and Actions' stated that he didn't believe any of the 'Favorites' were strong enough for a 22 mag.  This action is not a falling block, it's swinging block..  The rolling block is a fine rifle although they can be a little problematic to get the block timing right.  De Haas says the No.4 would easily handle the 22 mag so shough do as well with the 17HMR.  Of course the larger No.1 and 1 1/2 actions should have no strength problems at all, though the tiny little round will look a bit funny in the huge action.  I've a little No.4 with the threaded barrel. Aquired many many years ago in a deal.  It's sans barrel and was a 32.  I've been considering what to build on it for several years.
