Value of a 4 digit serial number 1911 Colt?

I have a friend that owns a 4 digit serial # 1911 Colt that was original government issue, in good condition, hasn't been reconditioned.  How much might this be worth to a serious Colt collector?  He's thinking of having a gun auction, but wonders how much to expect for this particular piece.
