Which H+R/NEF Rifle Will You Be Hunting With?
« on: July 25, 2004, 04:40:45 AM »
I just bought my 2004-2005 season hunting license last week, and already the deer hunting fever is setting in. I can post for my anterless permit next Monday. I have decided the BC will get the nod for deer season this year. I hoping the 300 gr. Barnes X bullets I'm loading will work out. I haven't gotten to try them since I loaded them, but have high hopes. 300 gr. X bullet at 2100 FPS should more than do the trick! What's your rifle pick for deer this year, and what load will you be using?

Well, that question really presents a dilemma for me! I would have liked to use one of my new NEF ss rifles for deer or elk this year, having a .243, 25-06, .357 maxi already and a .45-70 on the way, but looks like I'll be hunting with my black diamond instead due to an opportunity to hunt on private land for deer and maybe elk during the muzzleloader season. I may just have to buy a non-resident license and tag in western Oregon to use one of these new to me centerfires. Would really like to hunt with one of em, but I may have to wait until next year.... :?

I'll be going after hogs on Fort Hunter Liggett in September, I'll be using my new .356 Winchester NEF with the Speer 220 gn. I rechambered it from my .357 MAX so I can use heavier bullets. It will stabilize 220's very well at 2200'

For me it will be archery season from Oct.1 until Oct. 23rd when I will break out the Huntsman and the Powerbelts. Have taken vacation time for the Mon., Tue., and Wed. after opening weekend of Muzzleloader season here in Okla. Then back to archery until Nov. 20 - Dec. 5  when I will be pursuing the elusive whitetail with my Ultra Hunter 25-06 and 117gr. spitzers. Then back to archery again until the special doe hunts toward the end of Dec. when I will be using the Ultra again. I am thinking of taking my daughter for the Special Youth Antlerless Hunt weekend scheduled for Oct. 15-17. The beauty of the Ultra is that it's not too much gun for her to handle now that she is 12 years old. That hunt takes place before any other gun hunts here so our chances for success should be good. I am really ready to get started and can't hardly wait.

lik2hunt, you're sure reminding me of the good ole days when Washingtonians could do that, but it's been a long time since switch hitting...er, shootin has been allowed here. We gotta choose one weapon when we buy tags here and that's what we're stuck with for that species for the year. I used to do all of em, archery, ML and modern rifle, now I usually spit it up between modern rifle deer and ML elk or some combination like that...I'm jealous....

I will be taking my 30-06 Handi out for Caribou in August.  I will be using my .35 Whelen Handi for Black Bear in late September, my son will be carrying his 45-70 Handi.  In between unfortunately the NEFs just aren't big enough.  It takes a lot to bring down a big Moose, or Grizzly, possiably at 300 yards.  That rules out the NEFs.  After my big trip in September the 30-06 Handi will see weekly use looking for Black Bear, and Wolves.

I'll be using my 30-30 and 45-70. In hte 30-30 I will be using Hornady SST's driving them at 2360 fps, I have not yet decided what load I will be using in hte 45-70 but very likely Lee's 405 HP at 1500 fps or so.

Well, much like Lik2hunt, I'll be starting with a bow on Oct 1st (Hopefully a new Archery Research bow), then going to my CVA Muzzleloader for BP season.

When rifle season rolls around, I'll be carrying my 45-70 "Ultra" rifle, and my Ruger SRH .44mag with cast 405's in the 45-70, and cast 300's in the .44.

I have a unblooded huntsman from last year, a 12 ga ultra for some areas shot guns only , a 357 and a 243 I lucked out on finding for a good price all in need of a first  deer . I also have a 45/70 , 30-30 and a 20 ga tracker barrel on order. Then there are the 44mag and 25-06 which would like to see another deer this year. Maybe I can find something to use.

I may start my season Sept. 1 in New Mexico bowhunting, then bowhunt Okla.  I'll probably use my 45 70 and 280 in rifle season, but the 300
Wby. will be in the camper also. If I can get the 280 to shoot less than a 1/2" at 100 yds. I'll use it .   Digger

:D  greetings everyone

Well it's no secret that I love the 45-70 and 45-90 cartridges.  Now I would like to use my Sharps again, BUT I just might say fudge it all and use my SB-2 Ultra in 45-70 with the scope.  This is the one that gets the most use and I do love it's 22" barrel.

Come hunting season, I just may have to flip a coin to see.

I failed to mention that I also intend to try out the 12 ga. Pardner that I had sawed-off to 23" with some 2 3/4" Brenneke slugs. There are areas here that are shotgun only and therefore get little use during the actual rifle seasons. There are a lot of deer in these areas that get shot at a lot during archery seasons but since there is so much land that isn't shotgun only then they get left alone during the 16 day rifle season. Where I usualy hunt the traffic really picks up during rifle season (public land) so the deer get smart and become nocturnal or just head out entirely after about the third day. So I'm gonna try some of the shotgun areas during that time. If I get my 20 ga. (recently purchased from MSP Ret) drilled, tapped, railed, and scoped by then I'll be trying it also.

Sourdough - I have a friend that will be arriving in Alaska for some visiting on the opening day of Caribou season, good timing huh? He was wondering about fees i.e., non-resident tags, permits, etc.  Can you help us out with some info? Thanks

Depending on which stand I am in, it will either be a 243 Ultra or a 45/70 Sharps. Good hunting to all.

Quick' - You have to tell them (the State) what gun you will hunt with when you get your tags!!!    That blows... what if the gun you choose breaks just prior to or during a hunt?  Are you allowed a substitute?  What is the purpose of this cock-a-mamie legislation?

Sorry - reread your post. I see now you have to choose what season you will hunt which species basically.  That's a little easier to swallow but not much.

I plan on my next NEF deer to be with the 20 gauge Tracker II.

My Dad will be using my NEF .357 Max to hopefully anchor his first deer.

I will be using my Huntsman during Maryland's Blackpowder season. It is now wearing a 2-7x 32mm scope. I got rid of the red dot.

I will be using the 12g Utlra if I am hunting a shotgun county and my 30/30 Handi if I hunt a rifle county. I hope to have the Handi scoped before then.

And if my son passes the hunter's safety course he will be using the 20g Topper during the MD youth hunt.

I will be using my 243 ultra to fill my whitetail and mule doe tags. I'll use my 338 win mag (ruger 77) for my mulie buck tag, I don't think 243 win is quite enough especially if I do not have the stuck case issue cleaned up. In the winter I'll switch over to yote's hopefully earn enough for a 223. I have got some work to do to get a big game load going before then though.

I'll be using my bp gun and round balls for bull elk and doe deer in mid Sept., but I'll be picking up an extra cow elk tag for early Oct and the nef 30-30 could be the one.  Other's in the running are my K31 7.5X55 (again  ), a Mosin 91/30 that I just picked up and seems to shoot good, 1885 Winchester in 45-70 and an outside chance on a Savage 7-08 if it will straighten up and shoot right :(

The nice thing about the 30-30 is that it's a 12 gauge combo and that pretty much fills all the requirements for the cow elk and the blue grouse.

I only own one NEF/H&R Rifle, a .280 Remington that I hope to bag a deer or two with this fall.  My H&R Topper in .410 will put a few squirrels and bunnies in the pot also if I don't use my High Standard 6" revolver on all them.

I suppose I'll use the .357 Mag with 250 gr Beartooth LFNGC's or 180 gr XTP in .360 DW cases.

I had considered the .223, which is legal in Texas, but I believe I'll use something with a little heavier bullet.

I'll be using my Ultra with the 44mag barrel on it.
My new synthetic stocks came today!   And they fit with the bull barrel. Going out this weeekend and see how it shoots with the new stocks. Lightened the rifle over a pound. Feels a lot better now, slimmer and lighter. Will be using 265gr. RNFP-GC's ahead of H-110. It will put five shots in one hole at 50yds. But at 100yds. they open to about 2-1/2 to 3 inches. Should be sufficient for where I hunt. I'll have my S&W Model 629 w/ a five inch barrel on my hip,  loaded with 250gr. Keith bullets.
BUT... I'm REALLY waiting on the muzzle loading season which comes first in Tenn. to try my new Huntsman barrel that is on my NWTF shotgun recivier. With that stright grip stock in the camo laminate it has to be the most beautiful muzzleloader I've ever seen.
Going to take a couple days off work for that season.

Bow season in VA starts Oct 2., and i'll be perched high above whitetails and turkeys that day on our hunt club.  Muzzleloader starts Nov. 6, and i'll be after 'em with my Huntsman .50, using CVA 245gr. slugs with 90 grains of Pyrodex RS.  Rifle season starts Nov. 13, and i'll be using either the Tikka .308 with 150 gr. Hornady SST's or the Handi in .270 with 130gr. Winchester Pointer point plus.

For all the posters who replied they would use a shotgun for deer.  Is that a choice, or is it a law in the state where you hunt.  Illinois i know shotguns must be used.  In va, there are a few counties that specify the same thing...

Also, why 20 and not 12 gauge?

I am just curious...

In the H&R/NEF, a 20ga barrel with scope base will fit on the regular receiver. The scoped 12ga barrel needs the larger 10ga receiver. Either one will make a large enough hole in a whitetail.

I'm just back from a few days of wet weather camping with the Boy Scouts. I had a nice surprise when I got back, my rifle range membership card arrived. This range is about a five minute ride so I can use it just about every evening. It will make working up hunting loads a lot easier. BP season starts the last week of Oct. here in PA. It will be my first year with BP, and I have some practicing to do before then. I just picked up some powerbelts to try, if they don't work out, I'll be using saboted 270 gr. Gold Dot bullets. Regular rifle season doesn't start until the first week of Dec. so I'll have plenty of time to work on my BC loads.
