30-40 Krag

OK,

With all the fuss over 30-30AI underway, let me switch gears and throw a monkey wrench into the works.

Has anyone done a chamber ream in a 30-30 to 30-40 Krag in the Handi rifle? The rate of twist looks to me like it would (1 in 10) stabilize the larger grain bullets available to load in a Krag case.

Also, both cartridges are rimmed, so there would be a proper extractor in place with no switching necessary.

Finally, 30-40 Krag is traditionally a low pressure round (if you go with factory Winchester) and I think the 30-30 barrel could withstand it.

Who can prove me wrong on these theories? Also, what arguments can anyone provide to not do this, based on what I might have missed?

Oh, and in case anyone can, who can prove me right?

Coltrane,

I rechambered to .30-40 from a .30-30 barrel, and it works fine. I've never checked the rounds from a chronograph, but all normal loads for the Krag work great with the .30-30's 1 in 10 twist which is pretty much the 30 cal standard.

yes it can be done i also had one  rechambered it worked fine i would recomend it over the problems of rimless casess itsmore power than the 30-30 but not as much as 06      sold it before i got my crony but the 2 buck it killed with imr 3031 and 168 gr bthp bullets worked as good as my 06 without the extractor problems :D
